This Ghanian Man Got Married In The U.S. Now Homophobes In His Homeland Are Trying To Revoke His Citizenship

"We would not allow someone who is gay to come and contaminate our people here."

Stephen Kabutey Ofoi Ceasar (or Stephen Anertey Caesar, as some Ghana news outlets are reporting his name) is a prominent man from Ghana who attended a prestigious academy and went onto become a TV host in his home country.

Now citizens from Ghana are trying to get his citizenship revoked.

Ceasar moved to America to marry his boyfriend, Ryan Lathrum. The two were married in Sonoma Valley, CA and now homophobes in the African country are trying to ban him from Ghana because of the public ceremony—even though some of Ceasar's family members and school classmates were present.

Dr. Maurice Ampaw, a controversial Ghanian lawyer, is leading the charge to make sure that Ceasar is never allowed back in Ghana on the grounds that he is "persona non grata," or "an unacceptable or unwelcome person."

“Ghana’s laws are against gay marriage and anal sex is illegal so if he as a Ghanaian has married a gay partner then he must be forced to renounce his citizenship or we have to denounce his citizenship in entirety because he is an illegality and ought to be refused visa at the embassy," Ampaw wrote online.

“He is an illegal person and must not try to enter Ghana,” he argued further. “He even ought to go ahead and denounce his Ghanaian citizenship because we would not allow someone who is gay and has married under gay laws to come and contaminate our people here….”

Ampaw wasn't the only Ghanian to speak out against Ceasar's marriage. A local Ghana news site, Yen, posted the news of the ceremony on its Facebook and the comments were filled with homophobic language:

Homosexual acts are illegal in the African country and punishable by up to three years in prison. In March of this year two men were arrested for having sex in a hotel room in Ghana.

Authorities allegedly forced two men to pose naked for photos earlier this week before arresting them.

A hotel employee burst into the room and eventually called the police after growing suspicious of the 28-year-old man and his 18-year-old lover, according to Ghana media outlets.

They were even forced to simulate sex for some of the photos, which were spread across social media in an attempt to publicly shame them.

In 2015, Ghana made it onto the list of the worst places to be gay.

Ceasar has not spoken out about his marriage since the ceremony took place Friday, September 1.
