Stephen Sondheim Working On New Version Of "Company." Bobby Will Be Gay!

Stephen Sondheim's Company is one of his most beloved musicals, but the show is getting a major facelift: The New York Times is reporting Sondheim is reworking the material with Once director John Tiffany for a possible Broadway run. One big change: Bobby will be openly gay, and juggling multiple boyfriends with a fear of commitment.

Theater writer Pat Healy reports some characters will even switch genders: Joanne, who sings “The Ladies Who Lunch” and was originally played by Elaine Stritch, is going to be played by Alan Cumming in a staged reading on Friday for Roundabout Theatre Company.

Fans of the Tony-winning show have long contemplated Bobby, a single man gathering friends together to celebrate his 35th birthday, is actually a closeted homosexual—something Sondheim and  Company's book writer, George Furth, avoided confirming. But Tiffany's idea that Bobby be out and proud tickled Sondheim's fancy.

“It’s still a musical about commitment, but marriage is seen as something very different in 2013 than it was in 1970,” Sondheim says. “We don’t deal with gay marriage as such, but this version lets us explore the issues of commitment in a fresh way.”

Daniel Evans, nominated for a Tony for the 2008 revival of Sunday in the Park with George, will play Bobby in Friday's tragically private performance. Joining him and Cumming are Bobby Steggert and Michael Urie, among others. Should the staging go well, Roundabout might—might—consider a full production.

Should that production come to pass, who would you cast? Neil Patrick Harris is already warming up his pipes for Hedwig and has performed in Company before. Urie could be another contender, though he might not be enough of a name. Anyone know if Zachary Quinto can sing?
