Gay "Steven Universe" Artist Hounded Off Twitter

“I decided I don’t want to be accessible to thousands of people who think because I work on a TV show that I owe them myself all the time."

A storyboard artist for Steven Universe deleted her Twitter account this week after being consistently harassed by fans of the show.

The attacks reportedly started earlier this month, when Lauren Zuke posted a drawing of two of the show's characters, Lapis and Peridot, on her Tumblr after the episode "Beta" aired.

Fans reportedly thought the photo meant Zuke was showing support for shipping the two characters, known as Lapidot in fan circles, instead of popular ship Amedot, made up of Peridot and Amethyst.

They also accused Zuke, who is an openly gay woman, of queer baiting them with a potential same-sex relationship that they thought would never come to fruition, despite the show having one of the most diverse casts and previously-introduced gay themes.

The attacks apparently became too much for Zuke, as she explained her frustration over the situation before eventually deleting her account entirely.

“Remember you’re tweeting at a literal human being (that’s what I am btw) and life exists outside of Steven Universe,” she tweeted to the angry mobs of fans.

Last year, a fan artist attempted suicide because she received so much harassment over the body proportions in the art she posted to the Steven Universe Tumblr.

The unnecceassary negativity is causing more peaceful fans to step in and ask for the harassment to stop, admitting that the fandom is now becoming "toxic."
