Stockholm Celebrates Pride With Same-Sex Traffic Lights

"We want to show that we're an LGBT-friendly city—and show that even in tough traffic!"

Though Pride Month in the U.S. is officially over, the celebration continues around the world: Stockholm Pride runs from July 31 to August 6, and city officials are honoring the occasion with traffic lights featuring same-sex couples.

Some 48 temporary lights will be installed around Pride Park in the posh Östermalm district, close to the city's central Olympic Stadium. The project will cost the city 100,00 Swedish Kronas, or roughly $12,000.

"We want to show that we're an LGBT-friendly city—and show that even in tough traffic! We stand for one Stockholm for all," Stockholm deputy mayor Daniel Helldén told Swedish site The Local.

London, Vienna, and Madrid have also implemented pro-LGBT traffic lights in honor of Pride. Other cities have added rainbow colored crosswalks.

Started in 1998, Stockholm Pride draws an estimated 100,000 people every year.
