Queer nightlife is hurting right now. Bars and clubs across America are closed, which means your favorite bartenders and drag queens are currently out of work.
There have been a number of fundraisers for those impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This past weekend saw one of the largest yet: One World: Together At Home, which was spearheaded by Lady Gaga and Global Citizen, raised a whopping $127 million for the World Health Organization (WHO).
Your favorite LGBTQ celebs and allies are joining forces this week for another fundraiser: The Stonewall Inn Gives Back!, presented by New York City’s famed Stonewall Inn and World of Wonder. The event will be hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race squirrel friend Michelle Visage and YouTuber Tyler Oakley.
The livestreamed concert event will benefit LGBTQ nightlife professionals directly impacted by COVID-19. In addition to Visage and Oakley, performers at the event will include Shoshana Bean, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Allie X, Betty Who, Carlie Hanson, Darren Hayes, Dave Mizzoni, Greyson Chance, Issac Dunbar, John Cameron Mitchell, Kim Petras, Leland, Lorna Luft, Matt Rogers, MUNA, Nina West, Our Lady J, Pabllo Vittar, Peppermint, Rufus Wainwright, Todrick Hall, Troye Sivan, TUCKER, VINCINT, and Cyndi Lauper.
“The Stonewall Inn in New York City has, for decades, served as a beacon of hope in the LGBTQ+ community,” World of Wonder co-founders Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey said in a media statement. “World of Wonder similarly strives to build opportunities and access for the community, while standing beside them and The Stonewall Inn in the struggle for equality. In that same spirit, we are thrilled to partner for this one-night-only concert to offer help and support to the LGBTQ+ community during this difficult time.”
The Stonewall Inn Gives Back! will be streamed live on World of Wonder’s YouTube channel, WOWPresents. All proceeds from the event will go directly into a fund where industry professionals can apply for emergency assistance. The funds will then be redistributed as $1,000 grants on a first come, first served basis to those who have lost their livelihood due to the pandemic. Those interested in applying for a grant can do so on the Stonewall Gives Back website.
The concert event is being executive produced by actor Erich Bergen, who was also behind the recent Rosie O’Donnell Show fundraiser, which benefited The Actors Fund.
“I think this pandemic has made it even more clear just how vulnerable some of our communities actually are,” Bergen said in a statement. “We are coming together to respond to this crisis in a collaborative way, through music, which is the great unifier.”
Co-produced by Victoria Varela and sponsored by JetBlue, Brooklyn Brewery, Jägermeister, and Stoli Vodka, The Stonewall Inn Gives Back! will stream on the WOWPresents YouTube channel on Thursday, April 23 at 8pm ET/7pm CT.
