Student Disciplined For Wearing "Some People Are Gay" T-Shirt

"It's just a shirt—it's not hurting anybody."

An eighth-grader in Copperas Cove, Texas, says she was reprimanded by school officials for wearing a shirt that read "Some People Are Gay. Get Over It!"

Ali Chaney, who identifies as a lesbian, wore the shirt to S.C. Lee Junior High School on Monday. Ten minutes into her first class, she was called into the principal's office and told her shirt was distracting and violated the school dress code.

Chaney was ordered to change her shirt or face disciplinary action.

In a Facebook post, Chaney's mother, Cassie Watson, described the interrogation and its effect on her daughter.

"She was met by all the administration in one office where she was essentially bullied," Watson wrote. "She was told she could not leave the office until a parent brought her another shirt. She asked why and was told they weren't going to tolerate 'that' in their school."

Though it was never explicitly stated, Watson inferred administrators were referring to her daughter's public declaration of her sexuality. When Chaney called her, Watson said she was so upset that she had to check her out for the remainder of the day.

Watson says her daughter deserves an apology from the school.

"I would never, ever have expected it from the administration," she told KCEN . "I would think that the administration would be the first ones there to support her."

For her part, Ali is confused and hurt by the situation. "It's just a shirt, and it's not hurting anybody," she told KCEN.

In a statement, school district spokeswoman Wendy Sledd said "clothing that is disruptive to the learning environment based on reactions by other students is prohibited," adding that Chaney was "offered a school shirt to wear" but declined.

Last November, a Tennessee student was also disciplined for wearing a "Some People are Gay" t-shirt.

And in February of this year, a Northern California teen won a lawsuit against her school, which disciplined her for wearing a t-shirt that read "Nobody knows I’m a lesbian.”
