Students Stage Walkout After Administrators Allegedly Threatened to Out Gay Classmate

The student was out to her parents, who have since pulled her from the school.

Students at a private Catholic school in La Puente, California staged a walkout in solidarity with a classmate school officials allegedly threatened with outing if she didn't attend counseling and disciplinary meetings.

Magali Rodriguez recently transferred to another school after attending the Bishop Amat Memorial High School starting in freshman year. She told BuzzFeed News that despite the school having no written policy opposing same-sex relationships, it was that same year that school officials began targeting her for being in a same-sex relationship.

She said she was told not to sit with her girlfriend at lunch, and was forced to attend disciplinary meetings and counseling. She said the dean told her there had been complaints and that their relationship was "wrong," and that school officials told her if she didn't agree to their demands they would out her to her parents, who at the time were not aware she was gay.

Rodriguez told KNBC one administrator even told her and her girlfriend they were going to hell.

Eventually Rodriguez came out to her parents in a letter, prompting them to pull her from the school.

Her former classmates walked out of classes on Friday.

"I never would’ve imagined Amat to be an environment like this," one student, who wished to remain anonymous, told BuzzFeed. "Once I started to read about the article I was in full shock. I decided to walk out to stand up for her."

The student added that the principal made an announcement before the bell rang for lunch acknowledging the press regarding the situation, and that counseling services were offered in the library for anyone who had questions about it.

"I decided to walk out because I wanted to take a stand," another student, who also wished to remain anonymous, said. "I didn’t agree with what the administration did with the situation and I feel like it was a good idea for the student body to stand as one to show our support for Magali."

That same student reported about 200 students joined in on the demonstration.

The school issued a statement denying anti-LGBTQ bias.

It added that "students who are involved in a relationship may socialize appropriately on campus; however, engaging in excessive displays of affection is not permitted by any student."

Rodriguez denies the pair engaged in anything of the sort and said she had witnessed opposite-sex couples engaging in such displays without ever facing disciplinary actions.
