One In Four Gay Men Have Contracted A Sexually Transmitted Illness While In A Relationship

Is a lack of education to blame?

A new study finds that nearly a quarter of gay men have contracted a sexually transmitted infection while in a relationship.

The survey, conducted by FS Magazine, polled 1,000 men and found that 23% had contracted an STI while dating another man, with the most common being chlamydia and gonorrhea. Worth noting is that 14% of the men had contracted HIV while in a relationship, with 44% claiming they were infected by their primary partner.

Ian Howley of GMFA thinks that a lack of communication and education are to blame for the rocky relationship results, according to GT Magazine.

“It’s very clear from this survey that gay men are not getting basic sex and relationship education that many heterosexual people receive," Howley said.

“We grow up in a heterosexual world where same sex relationships are not an everyday sight," he added. "We get no training as young gay men in how to form stable, healthy relationships with someone of the same sex."

A UCLA study released last fall revealed that gay men on PrEP were much more likely to contract sexually transmitted infections other than HIV—including 25.3 times more likely to acquire gonorrhea and 45 times more likely to contract syphilis. In that study, researchers believed less frequent condom was a key factor.
