Study Suggests Gay Thoughts Are "Essential" For Human Evolution

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth believe that the evolutionary reason for homosexuality might simply be because it helps people bond with others of the same sex.

"From an evolutionary perspective we tend to think of sexual behavior as a means to an end for reproduction," said Dr. Diana Fleischman, the report's lead author told The Telegraph. "However, because sexual behavior is intimate and pleasurable, it is also used in many species, including non-human primates, to help form and maintain social bonds."

Indeed, it's an old argument often trotted out about how since same-sex sex doesn't result in procreation, it is not "useful" to human evolution.

The study looked at predominantly heterosexual women and men and discovered that those with higher levels of the hormone progesterone were more likely to have gay or homoerotic thoughts.

Since progesterone is associated with group-bonding, the researchers concluded that having homoerotic thoughts accompany the desire for same-sex alliances, which would have aided the formation of the earliest hunter-gatherer societies.

Basically: it's great for teamwork!
