NEXT: 5 Films To See At Sundance 2012

Pretty, funny woman

The Sundance Film Festival is here once again, the time of year where every “cool” actor and actress in Hollywood heads to Utah to drink for an entire week. Not that it isn’t all about the movies, and this year offers a pretty impressive line-up of films both in and out of competition. With that in mind, here are the five can’t miss films for any of you guys crazy enough to be on your way to good old Park City.

  • Celeste and Jesse Forever — Rashida Jones and cowriter Will McCormack scored themselves a much coveted spot on The Black List with this, their first screenplay. The film tells the story of a husband (Andy Samberg) and wife (Jones) who married young and are now separating but trying to remain close friends, even as they both begin dating other people. Catch it now before everyone in Williamsburg deems it the greatest love story of this century.
  • Robot and Frank — There are few actors better than Frank Langella and everything about this film looks funny and devastating at the same time. In the distant future Frank (Langella), an ex-jewel thief, bonds with his robot caretaker in this dramedy. Ugh, what an awful word. It is the first major feature from both the director and writer, and we have a sneaking suspicion it may be the big breakout at this year’s festival.
  • Liberal Arts — Say what you want, but we thoroughly enjoyed Josh Radnor’s Happythankyoumoreplease. He is back at Sundance with the film Liberal Arts with the best thing you can have at the festival — last year’s Queen of Sundance Elizabeth Olsen as his costar. Let’s hope his writing and directing is up to her talent.
  • Shut Up and Play the Hits — For anyone that saw the final performance of LCD Soundsystem last year at Madison Square Garden, this documentary may just be too much. It may also be too much for those who missed it. The film follows front-man James Murphy for forty-eight hours, both before and after the group’s final gig.
  • Bachelorette — Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan and Isla Fisher are hoping to steal some of the Bridesmaids mojo with this film about three bitches who are forced to play bridesmaids to a woman they used to ridicule back in high school. The film already managed to get one thing very right when it cast Bridesmaids scene stealer Rebel Wilson in the role of the bride-to-be. This should be pretty hysterical.
