Super Deluxe Greenlights "Golden Girls" Writers' Sitcom About Older Gay Men
If you've been craving a gay(er) version of The Golden Girls, your prayers have been answered: Super Deluxe has tapped veteran TV creators Stan Zimmerman and James Berg to produce Silver Foxes, a sitcom about gay seniors and their twink friend living it up in Palm Springs.
Berg and Zimmerman actually worked on the O.G. Golden Girls, as well as Gilmore Girls, Roseanne and Rita Rocks.. The premise for the new half-hour, single-camera series involves the lifelong buddies rescuing a another friend fleeing a homophobic nursing home.
“Every one of us is getting older,” Zimmerman told Party Foul Radio with Pollo & Pearl. “Especially with gays and lesbians and transgender, we create our own families—and that’s what The Golden Girls did. Those women came together and supported each other.”
There’s been no word on casting, but last year, a table reading for the pilot featured George Takei, Leslie Jordan, Bruce Vilanch, and Cheri Oteri.
Despite its obvious parallels to Golden Girls, Zimmerman says Silver Foxes was actually inspired by Gen Silent, a Logo documentary chronicling the struggles facing LGBT seniors, including isolation and having to go back in the closet when moving into assisted living.
Super Deluxe, which is owned by Turner Broadcasting, is looking to produce Silver Foxes for either a cable network or streaming service. The company also produced the queer-deaf dramedy This Close for Sundance Now and is also working on a television adaption of the queer classic film My Beautiful Laundrette, with Kumail Nanjiani attached to co-write and co-star.
