“Supergirl” Casts Maggie Sawyer’s Homophobic Father For Season 3

"24" actor Carlos Bernard will play Sawyer's father, who kicked her out of the house when he learned she was a lesbian.

Supergirl has cast 24 actor Carlos Bernard as Oscar Rodas, the father of lesbian police detective Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima). Rodas, an original character not found in DC Comics, is also a cop, who kicked Swayer out of the house when he learned she was a lesbian.

Lima was a series regular in Season 2, and developed a relationship with Supergirl’s adopted sister, Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh). But producers revealed Lima would be making fewer appearances in Season 3 because of other commitments.

“Any character people love is not there as much as people want them there. [But] from my perspective, we will use her as much as we can,” said showrunner Greg Berlanti. “She’s wonderful on the show, and she’s got some real ardent fans, as she should. We wanted more of her, but she’s got other things in the hopper, other things she wants to consider.”

In May, Lima tweeted her appreciation for fans of the couple, who have been nicknamed “Sanvers.”

“While this role was only meant for one season, I’m excited to appear in Season 3, as we see the #Supergirl story unfold #Sanvers #NotOverYet,” she wrote. “The best part of playing Maggie is getting to share an inspiring LOVE story & representing the LGBTQ+ community.”

Supergirl’s third season begins October 9 on the CW.
