Lesbian Romance On "Supergirl" Ending As Floriana Lima Leaves The Show

“We adore Floriana and have loved working with her to tell this inspiring story,” says executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.

The Season 2 finale of Supergirl last week ended with Alex Danvers proposing to her girlfriend, police detective Maggie Sawyer. But now the future of one of TV's few lesbian couples looks as ill-fated as the planet Krypton: Floriana Lima, who plays Sawyer on the CW show, is leaving to pursue other opportunities. (She'll appear in several episodes in Season 3 to wrap up the #Sanvers storyline.)

After Alex (Chyler Leigh) proposed, Maggie didn't broke into a huge smile. So either Maggie unexpectedly says no, says yes but has to leave town, or she meets an untimely end before they make it to the altar. Given how many TV lesbians have met gruesome fates, we're really counting on that last option not to happen.

“We adore Floriana and have loved working with her to tell this inspiring story,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said in a statement. “Although she’s not available to us as a series regular next season... we’re happy she’ll be returning for multiple episodes in Season 3.”

In February, Maggie and Alex's relationship was the focus of Supergirl's Valentine's Day episode.

On Friday night, Lima tweeted, "The best part of playing Maggie is getting to share an inspiring love story & representing the LGBTQ+ community," and "While this role was only meant for one season, I'm excited to appear in season 3, as we see the #Supergirl story unfold #Sanvers #NotOverYet"

Earlier this month, she told TVLine, "What’s important is to show [Maggie/Alex] as a relationship and not to focus fully on the fact that these are two gay women... We want to get it right, and we want to really think things through.”
