"Supergirl" Season 3 Will Give Alex And Maggie A "Modern-Day Love Story," Say Producers

"[It] hopefully will resonate," says EP Robert Rovner, "and, I think, will be very satisfying."

At the end of Supergirl's third season, Kara's sister, Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), had just popped the question to girlfriend Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima). But news that Lima was stepping down from being a regular cast member made fans nervous about the fate of #Sanvers.

Now Supergirl executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Quelle are quelling those fears (for the time being, anyway), promising to give us as much of the couple as possible.

“We love Floriana [Lima] and we were sad that she wasn’t able to come back full-time," Rovner said at San Diego Comic-Con last month. "We love this relationship we’ve created and, with that, we’re going to be telling a modern-day love story that really honors their relationship. [It] hopefully will resonate and, I think, will be very satisfying. Hopefully, she will come join us... The door is always open.”

“Maggie is welcome to come back anytime she’s free!” Queller added. “We love Sanvers, and we’re very sad that Floriana is not available full-time this season. It was a very meaningful story to us, and it meant so much to us that it resonated with the fans and we felt like this is a story that still needs to be told about a young woman or a grown woman coming to terms with her sexuality in a very honest and grounded and truthful way. We worked really hard to honor that.”

Maggie will definitely be around, though—and so will her dad: 24 actor Carlos Bernard has been cast as Oscar Rodas, a cop who refuses to accept his daughter being a lesbian. It was revealed in Season 2 that Maggie's parents kicked her out after she came out to them, so we expect some serious family drama when Season 3 begins October 9.
