Boyfriends Reed Kelly and Josh Canfield will put their relationship to the test in the new season of Survivor, premiering tonight on CBS.

"I've been a fan of Survivor since it started," Kelly tells NewNowNext. "Josh came over and watched it for the first time about two years ago, when we began dating. And I remember he said, "Why haven't you applied to be on this show?!?" And I was, like, "Because I ll get on it and we’ll have to do it!"

Not long after, Kelly broke down and made an audition tape—only to discover Canfield had already filmed his. The rest is reality-TV history.

But while the boys are both actors, for them Survivor wasn't about getting on television. "We've already done that," says Kelly. "This was about playing this game—the pushing yourself, the hyper-competitiveness."

Indeed, they admit competition has been a cornerstone of their relationship: "Even at the gym, we're like 'did you do more reps than me?'," confesses Canfield.

Adventurousness also defines Kelly and Canfield as a couple: Last year they visited the Mayan ruins of Tulum in Mexico and stayed in a hut on the beach.

But will being high-stepping stage pros help them on Survivor? "I think it's an advantage," says Kelly. "Historically when you take someone more physical and put them on the show, it's an advantage."

San Juan del Sur marks the second time Survivor has invited couples to compete together, and the guys have a few tips if you and your significant other are thinking about getting on the show.

"Honestly assess where you are in your relationship," advises Kelly. "Everything gets amplified on television. You're marooned on a desert island, there's cameras, there's a million dollars—it's amplifed. If you have issues—you’ll have bigger issues."

Canfield believes keeping perspective is also important. "Remember, at the end of the day, it is just a game. Its supposed to be, in a sense, fun. Keep telling yourself, "This is something we wanted to do.”
