Sweden Adds A New Gender-Neutral Pronoun, It's A Baby Girl For Nate Berkus And Jeremiah Brent: Today In Gay

word dictionary

Sweden is officially adopting a new gender-neutral pronoun.

"Hen" can be used if the gender of the person is unknown, if they are on the trans spectrum, or to avoid making a sexist generalization.  It was first coined in the 1960s as a way to avoid using "hon" (or "he") all the time in examples—and caught on with Sweden's trans community in the early 2000s.

“For those who use the pronoun, it’s obviously a strength that it is now in the dictionary,” says editor Sture Berg.

"Hen" is one of 10,000 new words appearing in the Swedish Academy dictionary, which is updated every ten years.

Actor Max Irons is the cover model for April's Out magazine, where he weighs in on his famous father, Jeremy Irons, declaring that same-sex marriage could lead to people marrying their children.

"I remember thinking, 'You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re thinking through a problem out loud,'" says the younger Irons. "I know my father, and his views are similar to mine: As long as you don’t harm anyone else, what you do and who you love are nobody’s business."

Jeremy says his father has clarified his statement, but "truth be told, if you pushed him to explain what he was talking about, I don’t think he’d actually know.”

jonathan irvineRoland Emmerich's long-awaited historical drama, Stonewall, is heading to theaters this fall—suggesting producers are hoping for at least a few Oscar nominations.

Written by Other Desert Cities playwright Jon Robin Baitz, the film follows the political awakening of a young man (War Horse's Jonathan Irvine) in the wake of the protests that helped launch the modern gay-rights movement. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ron Perlman and Jonny Beauchamp co-star.

“I was always interested and passionate about telling this important story, but I feel it has never been more timely than right now," Emmerich, best known for action flicks like Independence Day and White House Down, said in a press release.

Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions, which will distribute the film, called Stonewalll "an explosive, dramatic story set against one of the monumental events of the 20th century."

Two cartoonists have narrowly avoided prison time for suggesting Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is gay.

Bahadir Baruter and Ozer Aydogan published a cartoon that showed Erdogan greeting an official who is making a hand gesture commonly used to insult homosexuals in Turkey.

The cartoonists faced nearly a year in jail for “insulting a public official," but were given a fine of 7,000 Turkish lira ($2,700) instead for good behavior during the trial.

Erdogan is pretty sensitive when it comes to criticism: A former Miss Turkey is facing jail time for allegedly insulting him on social media.

The Michigan woman who had her Planet Fitness membership canceled after she repeatedly complained about a trans woman using the women's locker room, is suing the fitness chain.

Yvette Cormier is seeking more than $25,000, citing "fear about using the gym facilities," "embarrassment and humiliation," "severe emotional distress" and "damage to reputation."

Her attorney alleged in a press release that she "has filed this lawsuit to protect Michigan women and children, and to hold Planet Fitness accountable for its irresponsible policy and actions."

The release also claimed the case "illustrates the potential harm caused by adding the proposed new categories of sexual orientation/gender identity" to state civil rights laws.

According to the complaint, Cormier suffered "aggravation, annoyance, discomfort, disgrace, feelings of oppression, humiliation, inconvenience, indignation, insult, mental anxiety, mental suffering, mortification, outrage, scorn, shame, sorrow, vexation, and worry."

But was she hornswaggled, bamboozled and run amok?!?

Chinese news outlets are reporting about a 20-year-old man who was imprisoned and nearly starved to death for five days by his ex-boyfriend.

The older man was reportedly a vice-president of a company and would pay Liu $100 for their frequent trysts. But after a few months, the man lost interest and ending things. He locked Lui in the apartment so there would be no "hassle" from his jilted lover.

Doctors say Liu would have died if he had gone without food for much longer,
