Iconic Boy Band Take That Launches New Stage Musical With A Gay Lead Character

Could it be magic?

One of the biggest boy bands to come out of the 1990s was Take That, the British quintet that gave us hits like "Could It Be Magic" and "Back for Good" and launched the career of Robbie Williams.

Now the band has collaborated on a new stage musical, The Band, debuting in Take That's home town of Manchester next month. The show sees five 40something women reuniting to fulfill their dream of meeting the boy band they obsessed over as teens. As an adult, one of the women reveals to her former BFFs that she's a lesbian.

She's not the only LGBT person on stage, though: Curtis T. Johnson, who plays one of the band members, was open about his sexuality while auditioning for the part on the BBC competition series Let it Shine.

“I was conscious about how I’d be received or perceived by the public because it was a big decision,” he told Gay Times."Somewhere out there, there’s a young gay or lesbian kid who is entitled to have that normality on TV now."

Members of the real Take That—Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen—introduced the cast on Monday at Manchester Pride.

The Band is written by Tim Firth, who co-wrote Kinky Boots and worked with Gary Barlow on the musical The Girls.
