Target Adding Gender-Neutral Bathrooms To All Store Locations

Is it a step toward inclusivity—or caving in to bigots?

On Wednesday, Target announced it will install gender-neutral single-stall bathrooms in all of its locations, seemingly to accommodate both trans customers and critics of its policy of allowing customers to use facilities that match their gender identity.

CFO Cathy Smith says the company is spending $20 million to install the one-person restrooms in stores that don't currently have them, with almost all of the 1,800 U.S. locations expected to be updated by November.

Is the move a practical one, or is the company caving in to critics who threatened a boycott after Target announced its trans-friendly policy in April?

"Some of our guests clearly are uncomfortable with our policy, and some are really supportive," Smith told the Huffington Post.

More than 700,000 people signed the American Family Association's pledge to stop shopping at Target, but the boycott is not believed to have been a factor in somewhat lagging sales, which are down 11.6% from this time last year.

“We want to make sure we provide a welcoming environment for all of our guests. One that is safe, one that is comfortable,” said CEO Brian Cornell in May.
