Target Phases Out Gender, Says Goodbye To "Girl" And "Boy" Signs

The big box retailer said the updates were suggested by Target customers.

Target has become one of the first major American retailers to take a stand against archaic gender stereotypes, announcing via press release that all stores will begin phasing out gender-based signage in some departments.

Target says the change comes in response to consumers who've complained about signage that genders toys and some children's apparel, like markers to distinguish "girl" toys from "boy" toys or "girl's" bedding from "boy's" bedding.

"In some cases, like apparel, where there are fit and sizing differences, it makes sense," said the release. "In others, it may not."

Though gender markers will remain in Target's clothing sections, "boy" and "girl" indicators will cease to exist in the Toy, Home, and Entertainment departments, where "suggesting products by gender is unnecessary."

Right now, our teams are working across the store to identify areas where we can phase out gender-based signage to help strike a better balance. For example, in the kids’ Bedding area, signs will no longer feature suggestions for boys or girls, just kids. In the Toys aisles, we’ll also remove reference to gender, including the use of pink, blue, yellow or green paper on the back walls of our shelves. You’ll see these changes start to happen over the next few months.

Commenters on Target's own corporate website, where the release is posted, have declared they'll "boycott Target" for caving to "this teenie tiny minority after just a few complaints."

The majority of others, thankfully, see Target's move for what it really is: Progress.
