Touch Down! Taron Egerton Sings in “Rocketman” Music Video

Egerton covers "Rocket Man," the first single from the upcoming film's soundtrack.

He’s not the man you thought he was at home.

An official music video has been released for Taron Egerton's cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man," the first single from the Rocketman soundtrack. Egerton, who plays John in the biopic, did all his own singing for the film.

The video features new footage from the upcoming movie interspersed with Egerton's intimate recording studio session.

"It was so important that the music I composed and recorded had to be sung by Taron," John says in a statement. "I wanted his interpretation of me, through Bernie’s lyrics and my music—not just acting. I left Taron in the hands of Giles Martin, who I trusted implicitly because he’s brilliant. I didn’t want to be in Taron’s shadows, watching over the process, I trusted them to do what they needed to do, artistically, and listening back I’ve been astonished with the results. Getting the music right was the most important thing, as the songs in the film are integral to the story."

"The beauty of having Elton involved with the film is we’ve been able to work with him to see how far we can take these classic songs," Egerton adds. "Giles Martin has impeccable taste and massive skills to bring the songs to a place where they are faithful and daring as well."

"Elton said, 'I don’t think I’ve heard anyone sing my songs better than Taron,'" Martin said in a recent featurette. "The great thing about Elton is that he wants Taron’s interpretations of his songs."

John's hit single "Rocket Man" first appeared on his 1972 album Honky Château.

Described as "an epic musical fantasy about the incredible human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years," Rocketman spotlights the relationship between the icon and his first manager, John Reid (Richard Madden), who was also his lover.

Paramount Pictures

Director Dexter Fletcher recently shut down "rumors" of a gay sex scene, which reportedly features Egerton and Madden in “a nude cuddle,” being censored to obtain a PG-13 rating from the MPAA instead of R. He tweeted that the film "has and always will be the no holds barred, musical fantasy that Paramount and producers passionately support and believe in."

The film also stars Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin, John's longtime writing partner, and Bryce Dallas Howard as John's mother. John's husband, David Furnish, is a producer.

The Rocketman soundtrack, out May 24 and available now for pre-order, will also feature an original duet between John and Egerton, “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again.”

Rocketman is in theaters May 31.
