13 Queer Easter Eggs You Might’ve Missed in Taylor Swift’s New Video

Trailer park Pride parade!

By Sam Manzella and Christopher Rudolph

The music video for Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” is just about the gayest thing we’ve ever seen—and trust us, that’s saying something. We assume you clocked the Queer Eye Fab Five and RuPaul, but we watched the star-studded video extra closely to identify 13 other super gay tidbits you might’ve missed upon first (or second, or third) watch.

Enjoy, and click here to watch this queer pop culture Infinity War in its entirety.

  1. Co-Director Drew Kirsch

This vibrant world is nothing new for co-director Kirsch, who has previously directed other music videos like John Legend’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and Lennon Stella’s “Bitch,” which also featured some same-sex smooching.

  2. That iconic Cher quote

If you haven’t watched this iconic interview clip with Cher, treat yourself. The pop diva recalls her mother telling her that she’d one day settle down and marry a rich man, to which Cher famously replies, “Mom, I am a rich man.”

  3. Hannah Hart’s boombox bicep curls

Does the YouTube star even lift? (Spoiler alert: she does.)

  4. Rainbow rooftops

There are rainbows all over this trailer park—even on the roofs!

  5. Ellen Degeneres’ new ink

“Cruel Summer” is, of course, a reference to the popular single by British girl group Bananarama. Apparently, the nod to the campy song has led some T-Swift stans to theorize that a cover of “Cruel Summer” will be included on Swift’s forthcoming album, Lover.

  6. Hayley Kiyoko, Archer Extraordinare

Archery is gay culture. You heard it here first, folks.

  7. Chester Lockhart’s trans Pride flag

This spooky singer-performer is no stranger to dramatics. I mean, if you are going to faint in the presence of Laverne Cox, waving a transgender Pride flag as you go down is definitely the way to do it.

  8. Taylor’s bestie, Todrick Hall

Todrick Hall is not only a member of the RuPaul’s Drag Race family and a fierce pop star in his own right—he is also one of Taylor’s besties who produced this video with her. He previously appeared in the video “Look What You Made Me Do” from Taylor’s previous album, reputation.

  9. Ryan Reynolds’ Stonewall painting

Mr. Blake Lively makes a quick cameo as an artist working on his latest painting. He’s looking at a burnt out trailer, but if you look at his painting, it’s of the iconic Stonewall Inn, home to the 1969 police raid and subsequent riots that sparked the modern gay rights movement.

  10. Ciara helps Jesse Tyler Ferguson tie the knot

Did someone hear wedding bells ringing? Pop star Ciara makes a cameo in the video, too, marrying actor-comedian Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his real-life husband, Justin Mikita.

  11. Pray Tell in the trailer park

Pose star Billy Porter brings a lewk to Taylor’s trailer park as he sashays past the anti-gay demonstration in full wig, caftan, and heels. Tens across the board!

  12. RuPaul’s Drag Race girls as pop divas

The video culminates in a Pop Queen Pageant with some familiar faces portraying some of our favorite pop divas. They are: Tatianna as Ariana Grande, Trinity the Tuck as Lady Gaga, Delta Work as Adele, Adore Delano as Katy Perry, A’Keria C. Davenport as Nicki Minaj, Trinity K. Bonet as Cardi B., and Jade Jolie as Taylor. And, of course, there’s Mother Ru, who almost crowns a winner.

  13. Two drama queens squashing their beef

What feud?! Get it—Katy Perry is dressed up as a cheeseburger because these queens are officially squashing their beef! (The “Never Really Over” singer is also obsessed with In-N-Out burger, but that’s neither here nor there.)
