Staffing Agency Fires Substitute Teacher Who Shamed Boy for Having Two Dads

She told a student he shouldn't be thankful his dads would soon adopt him.

A substitute teacher who shamed a student in front of his classmates for having two dads has been fired.

The unnamed teacher allegedly told a fifth grade student at Deerfield Elementary School in Cedar Hills, Utah he shouldn't be thankful for having two dads, calling it "wrong" and "a sin."

She was removed from the school after three girls left to get the principal when she refused their requests for her to stop denigrating the child's family, according to Louis van Amstel, a dancer and choreographer who has appeared on Dancing with the Stars, who is adopting the child alongside his husband Joshua. He also reported, in a Facebook video posted on November 22, that the school called to inform him it would no longer employ the substitute.

"He was so fearful that this could make us think that we don’t want to adopt him,” van Amstel told The Salt Lake Tribune. “That’s definitely not going to happen. But this situation really hurt him. This person really hurt us.”

The teacher has now also lost her job with the staffing agency that hired her, Kelly Services. The company released a statement to ABC News that it was "concerned about any reports of inappropriate conduct and take these matters very seriously."

"We conducted an investigation and made the decision to end the employee’s relationship with Kelly Services," the statement continued.

"I can confirm that there was a situation involving a substitute," Alpine School District spokesman David Stephenson told ABC. "The school took appropriate action that day based upon their investigation."
