Beatles Rock Band Comes Out Tomorrow! Your Mom Is Stoked! Should You Be?
Your Rock Band "Octopus's Garden" will look something like this, perhaps?
Is tomorrow's big release of the new Beatles Rock Band game a big deal? Er, to quote The New York Times: "The Beatles: Rock Band is nothing less than a cultural watershed, one that may prove only slightly less influential than the band’s famous appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964... It may be the most important video game yet made." OY!
The big clincher to all this is how the Beatles Rock Game is expected to unite teen gamers and their parents (grandparents?) in a cross-generational frenzy. And this time around, if you screw up and can't play along well enough (Hey... those drums are hard to master!), you don't get booed offstage. Instead, the screen just serves you a more polite “Song failed” message.
But really, it's all about gathering friends, plowing through a bottle of red wine and getting to experience the exquisite beauty of those classic Beatles melodies, which pretty much changed the face of popular music... While your Rock Band guitar gently weeps, of course.
Beatles Rock Band Is Coming! "I Am the Gay Walrus" Anyone? Plus: Win the Game!
The big new Beatles Rock Band video game madness officially kicks off in one week (the game comes out on Sept. 9; you can pre-order it already). I've played Rock Band and looooved it. And I've got to say, I'm feeling this Beatles version. I think I'll be more into the later, trippier Beatles stuff -- "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "Helter Skelter" and such. Bearded Paul? Zen George? Yes, please...
Looks like you can choose to play on versions of the band's real instruments, and choose their classic venues (Abbey Road Studios, The Cavern Club, the Ed Sullivan Theater & more) to play in; and I love all the looks they offer for the Fab Four through the years.
But can I choose Yoko as my Beatles member? Is that allowed?
BONUS: Logo is giving away a Rock Band game to a lucky Beatle-maniac. Find out the deets! Maybe you'll win it!

Okay okay, he's not actually going to shoot anyone. But as a part of his presenting gig at last night's Spike Video Game Awards the recently-nominated out actor tapped his inner Jack Bauer while handing out the award for Best Indie Game.
Not sure what the joke was around the gun (but I'm sure there was one); to be honest I was more distracted by the other metal on NPH's hand ... while boyfriend David Burtka wasn't on the red carpet with NPH, he was there in spirit.
The testosterone-targeted event was hosted by Jack Black and featured appearances by Kiefer Sutherland, Eliza Dushku, Jerry Stiller, Megan Fox, Weezer, 50 Cent and more. Oh, and gay metal god Rob Halford of Judas Priest was also on the red carpet; check him (and more NPH pics) doing what he does best, after the jump!
2008 ThanksGIFTing Holiday Gift Guide: Jono's Techie Treats
NYC's own Jono is a techie product maniac (in a good way) and he's always clued in to the hottest new gadgets out here. Watch him bestow upon Nadia and Myriah (the pair behind Brooklyn's furniture/textile firm Nightwood) some gift-worthy gizmos that you might want for yourself.
After the jump, get the skinny on Jono's techie wonders. You could be groovin' Bluetooth-style in no time!
2008 ThanksGIFTing Needs for The Video Game Lovers / The "Gay-mers"
Holiday shopping still a work in progress? ...or maybe one not begun? Not to worry - just don't forget the gay-mers on your list. You know gays are big on the VGs (seriously! like how we all have a thing for Buffy). Ah, but buying a video game for a discerning player can be tricky, can't it? I know I have felt the killer combo of awkwardness and disappointment upon opening a telltale-shaped gift only to discover a copy of Jack Nicklaus Major Championship Golf. The right video game can make you the hero of any gift-giving fest, but don't be out of touch, civilians!
I've got some totally sick recs for all three systems, if I do say so myself: buzz-y and state-of-the-art, but with some real quality behind them. Check 'em all out after the jump...
In this week's Halloween edition of Angry Puppy, Marc and Lee review upcoming (and spooky) movies from the Swedish vampires of Let the Right One In to the organ repo men in Repo! The Genetic Opera. For a different kind of scary, they also look at the recently released Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull DVD. See all this, a Death Note jack-o'-lantern and a one-time-only cooking segment after the jump.
The title of the web series Sorority Forever is enough to scare me. Forever? That's such a long time. It's a little too cult-ish for my liking. Let's just learn the secret handshake, wear matching T-shirts and graduate college, OK?
So I wouldn't be watching this CW web series without a reason, and this is it: the new episode (clocking in at just three minutes, 11 seconds) is called "Girl on Girl." Intriguing, yes?Turns out I had good reason to be scared. Watch first, then we'll discuss:
In this week's Angry Puppy, Marc and Lee try to talk about Heroes and
The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but end up in a discussion on when and
what they can forgive in sci fi writing.
Also in this episode, they review the gay horror short In the Closet
and Milo Ventimiglia's gore-iffic Pathology (now on DVD).
All this and more geeky goodness, right after the jump!
This week, the guys of Angry Puppy throw a Rock Band 2 party with a
John, a Paul and a couple of Lizes for good measure. Find out who made
the cut for the Angry Puppy Rock-Adjacent Cameo Hall of Fame, or
APRACHoF, for those in the know.
In TV this week, Marc and Lee review not just the good stuff (Heroes,
Fringe, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, True Blood), but also the worst
of the worst (ahem, Knight Rider). They watch, so you don't have to!
Also in this episode: the new Sci Fi Channel series Sanctuary and the
long-awaited review of Cthulhu, now with a gay protagonist and 100%
more Tori Spelling.
All this and more geeky goodness, right after the jump!
This October, Lexus launches its branded, broadband entertainment channel, L Studio. Its aim is to create a destination site offering original, innovative content with familiar faces. A face both original and familiar is Lisa Kudrow, who wrote and produced the new series Web Therapy.
Web Therapy is a 15-part comedy series about Fiona Wallice, a psychotherapist who offers three-minute therapy sessions over the Web. Her character is another flavor of Kudrow Kooky, and the “therapy” that Wallice provides is humorously cringe-worthy. If you enjoy watching Ursula on Mad About You or Phoebe on Friends, you’ll find Web Therapy amusing enough.
Gwyneth Paltrow has decided to break into the world of online media ventures with the launch of GOOP, an inspirational “lifestyle” website for women. Well one thing’s for sure: If it’s anything like some of her acting ventures from recent memory (Shallow Hal, anyone?), it will be less-than-inspiring.
However, I’m a woman, and I’m open to the prospect of being inspired, so I figured I should at least give it a chance. Based on the site’s introductory post (the only content available so far), here’s the scoop on GOOP. Paltrow’s life is “good,” and on top of that, she is a good person. She is healthy and hard-working, and she loves being a mom. But the really exciting thing about all this is that she wants to help us make our lives good, too!
In this special closet-cleaning edition, Marc and Lee finally get rid
of their old VHS tapes and find some Star Wars paraphernalia they
forgot they had.
In between the riveting housecleaning scenes, find out what's going on
in JJ Abrams' new series, Fringe, and get re-acquainted with your
favorite cyborg in the new season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor
Chronicles. The guys also have a look at the soon-to-be-released Iron
Man DVD, John Barrowman's navel-gazing documentary and the indie
horror film Murder Party.
All this and more geeky goodness, right after the jump!
Back in May, we got you pumped for the summer debut of the so-gorgeous-we’d-watch-her-in-anything Rosario Dawson’s role in the web series Gemini Division. I’m not totally sure about this whole web series thing — this one, for example, will run 50 episodes that will be five to seven minutes each. I guess it’s good for people obsessed with sci-fi, but with attention spans too short for an actual television show. Anyway, I am sure that I love TV shows and movies that feature hot women kicking ass. Of course Dawson fits that bill for this series.
WIRED magazine thinks you do, or at the very least, you should. Allison is an internet celebrity, in the vein of Chris Crocker and Perez Hilton. By day, she's a dating columnist for Time Out New York, but the rest of her free time is devoted to taking pictures, making videos, Twittering, blogging and general self-promotion. She's kind of like a real life LonelyGirl15 with a Vimeo account.
The cool female character in Resident Evil 5 (Sheva Alomar) is modeled by Australian actress Michelle Van Der Water (pictured). Van Der Water was brought up in Oz, but moved to LA a few years ago to become an actor. She's also a former model and, judging by her filmography, this may well be her biggest role to date. (Side note: another Australian actress Anna Torv who will play FBI agent Olivia in the upcoming Fox series Fringe, stars in the PS3 title Heavenly Sword. She also played a rather hot lesbian in the miniseries Mistresses.) That's some great female representation!
In the long-awaited return of Angry Puppy, Marc and Lee take their title literally in an episode filled with puppies. The guys introduce their new mascot, and run down a list of the greatest sci-fi dogs.
But that's not all! Jumping species, the fellas get a little bat-crazy in reviewing The Dark Knight and a host of other bat-related titles. Plus, Dr. Horrible, Dr. Who, a new Mystery Geek Challenge, and much more!
There's quite a few tidbits of information from the video games press sector this week. Sure it's in the shadow of E3, but hey it's still video gaming news, so here we go.
Legacy Interactive has teamed up with Paramount Digital Entertainment to develop titles based on the popular Paramount Pictures’ films Clueless, Mean Girls and Pretty in Pink. Yes ladies and gents, it's all about casual gaming here and it sounds absolutely dire.
This week saw one of the biggest weeks in gaming, with E3 taking place.
For the uninitiated, or those living in a gaming haze, E3 is the E3 Media and Business Summit, formerly known as the Electronic Entertainment Expo. E3 is when all the big names in video gaming get together in a huge hall and pat one another on the back, flirt with the press and show off some of their upcoming wares. In a word or two, it’s a big deal.
What better week to start your AfterEllen.com video gaming blog, eh? We’ve got the low-down on all the big news from E3 and why you should care. If you’re not a gamer, perhaps it’s time to consider this a viable hobby? You know gaming makes more in a year than the film industry, shocking, but true. Why not give it a try. Here are some reasons why it’s good to be a gamer or why you should give it a try according to announcements from E3.
Last March, the team of fans behind Star Trek Phase II began producing "Blood and Fire" a gay-themed script originally written for The Next Generation in 1988 by "The Trouble With Tribbles" writer David Gerrold. The story would have included the franchise's first gay couple and dealt with a deadly disease that worked as an analogy to AIDS, but the episode never was filmed. The gay couple -- who were mostly written as good friends and only referred to as a couple in a couple lines -- stirred debates among TNG staff to the point that it was deemed easier just not to bother with the episode.
In this week's unintentionally Joss Whedoncentric edition, Marc and Lee review the
latest installment of the comic book series Buffy Season 8 as well as the Astonishing X-Men.
Turning to television, along
with their usual review of Doctor Who, Marc and Lee give a preview of
the next movie in here!'s "Everyday Gay Heroes" series, Solar Flare.
And
in the return of Lists, find out who are the nine greatest lesbian and bi
female characters in the sci fi/geek world.
Marc & Lee channel Agatha Christie's greatest literary detectives in order investigate recent Doctor Who episodes, as well as unwrap the mysteries of the Battlestar Galactica mid-season finale.
Also, Marc, still giddy that no one correctly answered the latest Mystery Geek Challenge, shares the geek highlights of NewFest and questions Beth Grant's true commitment to Sparkle Motion. Also in this episode, the boys of Angry Puppy review The Beast with a Billion Backs, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Polar Opposites.
Lee and Marc seem to be in particularly bubbly moods in this week's Angry Puppy ... could it have something to do with the mystery taste test substance that they mention at the start of the episode? You'll have to watch yourself to see what it's all about ...
Effervescence aside, the fellas have tons of stuff to talk about ranging from the Drawn Together DVDs to Sulu's wedding to the Andromeda Strain remake, and much more. Plus, the XXtremest Mystery Geek Challenge ever!
In this week's episode, Marc and Lee jump back into Doctor Who (loving the Sontaran aliens and the return of Martha Jones), Lost (favorite moment? Sun goes badass and takes over her father's company), and Battlestar Galactica (Is Lt. Gaeta's leg the final cylon?)
Then featured guest Flynn DeMarco (a.k.a Fruit Brute) joins the boys to talk about all the goings on at GayGamer.net.
In this week's abbreviated episode, Marc and Lee bring you a report on the Queer Media and Entertainment Conference (two words: Dawn. Wiener.), updates on the latest episodes of Lost, Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica and details on voting for the Angry Puppy Hot Geek 10.
Lee and Marc got a sneak peek at the upcoming Speed Racer live-action
movie and headed out to the Brooklyn Museum for the Murakami exhibit.
They also find out what Battlestar Galactica, Lost and Margaret Cho's
blog have in common.
This week, Marc and Lee talk about their visit to Comic Con in New York (which had more attendees than there are survivors on Batttlestar Galactica!), news for gay metalheads, domestic partner benefits for super heroes, Manazon, their final uncensored thoughts on Torchwood's second season and a whole lot more! Watch it after the jump!
From our perspective the most frustrating thing about this year's New York Comic Con wasn't the already-anticipated lack of gay characters in any of the big comic, film, or video game presentations or booths. After all, we weren't expecting much. Sadly, though we were thrilled to have a panel of our own, our biggest frustration was with the gay panel discussion, for which we had higher hopes.
Check out the descriptions of two panel sessions listed in the Con program, and see if you can spot our frustration...
In this week's episode, find out what Karl Lagerfeld is doing in Grand
Theft Auto IV, what Jenna Jameson is doing in a comic book and what
John Barrowman is doing on a game show with a bunch of kids.
Lee and Marc also review the latest episodes of Battlestar Galactica
and Torchwood and give you an exciting preview of Torchwood's season
finale. Last but not least, they list their ten favorite gay geeks.
Not like that's really too hard, these days. But fans of Luke and Noah (and their real-life counterparts, Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann) and the mechanisms of daytime television might want to keep an eye on the web show InTurn, which awards one lucky aspiring soap star with a 13-week contract on As the World Turns. (Get it? In Turn?)
While it doesn't look like any of the four male contestants is openly gay (three of the guys mention girfriends or wives in their bios), the preview video suggests that they'll be asked to do a guy/guy love scene in one of the challenges, as screencapped above. (From what I can tell, that's Peyton on the left and Michael on the right.)
In this week's episode of Angry Puppy, Marc and Lee talk about breaking movie news (keywords: Jake Gyllenhaal!), George Takei's Secret Talent, Jack and Ianto's Weevil-hunting clinch, some new X-Men books, and much, much more.
In this week's episode of Angry Puppy, Marc and Lee talk about breaking television news, gay sci-fi film fests, Buffy season Eight, the Doctor Who spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures, and much, much more.
Oh, and they speak Esperanto. Wanna know why? Check it out!
Is there not enough gay TV for you? Then maybe you should check out Gayborhood.tv, a site that features a variety of web series focused on different views of gay life, with discussion being heavily encouraged.
My immediate favorite so far is The Box, which started as a collection of gay people speaking their mind at various gay events. However, the tone of the series changes in the third episode, where people talked less about issues and more about the event they were attending. I remember when I was a kid, CBS used to mix little educational segments titled "In the News" amid the commercials -- The Box reminds me of that, giving you a quick view of The Folsom Street Fair, The Gay Rodeo Finals or The White Party in Provincetown.
In this week's whirlwind episode of Angry Puppy, Marc and Lee review
the new thriller Funny Games, the old thriller The Last House on the
Left, the two latest Torchwood episodes and Britney Spears' adventures
in South Park.
And in the brand spanking new headlines segment, they share some updates on Caprica, Stardust, Mass Effect, Rock Band, Arthur C. Clarke
and the recently Dumbledored Tom from Lost.
NewNowNext NOISE Pop-Culture Vlog: Gay(ish) Web Sites We Love!
We're back in the office for this week's vlog chat: John and I share our fave gay-related, gay-run or gay-appealing Web sites with each other - and with you! Some legit, some trashy, all very gay ... check it out!
Hulu.com officially
launched last week, and for those who may not be aware, it is the online
distribution channel developed as a joint partnership between NBC and FOX. The
site contains clips and full episodes from television shows both old and new.
Like YouTube, users can freely embed content from Hulu.com anywhere else on the
web (the clips that follow are examples). Unlike YouTube, the site won't host
any user-generated content, and each media clip has short advertisements at the
beginning and/or the end.
In addition to material from FOX and NBC, Hulu also offers
content from their many media partners such as Bravo, the Sci Fi Channel, FX, Sony,
the USA Network, E!, and others. (Unfortunately, ABC, which among the major networks has the best LGBT track record, does not participate in Hulu.)
This week Marc and Lee begin by geeking out over the new Justice League animated movie (which boasts one of the best voice casts evah), which leads to a discussion of some of the worst-cast projects of all time. Needless to say, it's a fun chat.
The fellas also talk Lost, Torchwood and It's Alive!, and toss in another Mystery Geek Challenge, to boot. Check it out!
This week Marc and Lee are back to discuss just how much they loved the new movie 10,000 BC, as well as the first episode of Fox's new series New Amsterdam. As usual, there's a lot to say about the new episode of Torchwood (in which we meet Martha Jones and finally find out exactly what's going on with Jack and Ianto).
Also this week, Marc and Lee's favorite fictional food products and a brand new member of the Gallery of Gay Action Figures!
In this week's episode of Angry Puppy, Marc and Lee talk about a few of their favorite gay geek websites (and mangle some names in the process). Marc's secret crush is revealed, and Lee reviews the Pride of Baghdad. Of course, you'll also get the now obligatory Torchwood review and learn some new ways to be involved with Angry Puppy.
Marc and Lee are back to talk about Blu-ray's victory over HD DVD and
using the AppleTV's new features to replace an accidentally erased
Lost. They also clarify Neil Gaiman's comments regarding Torchwood and
give their impressions of the new episode "Meat". Finally, they review
the sci fi/parkour movie District 13 (or at least the actors) and
recommend "10 Movies That Deserve a Second Chance".
As if Facebook didn’t already offer enough tempting ways
to waste time, apparently they’ve now developed their very own line
of quizzes, too. Recently I got a message in my news feed telling me
that one of my cousins had taken this quiz, and discovered that if she was a Disney
princess, she would be Pocahontas:
Since my cousin is an environmentally aware
outdoor adventurer who works for a company that cleans up oil spills,
this sounds plausible enough to me. Looking at the quiz, I also thought
it was completely cool that it was gay-friendly (asking “What kind
of guy/girl do you like?”).
Marc and Lee are back to dish on all things geek (sci-fi, fantasy, etc.) and even though the fellows say they aren't romantic, in honor of Valentine's Day they give Angry Puppy a special twist by discussing "geek" love including Willow and Tara on Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Marc and Lee also reveal that Neil Gaiman hates Torchwood and wishes all the characters would die. Now that's not a very nice thing to say on Valentine's Day!
I keep coming across lists I can't really improve on, so I'm just going to list them. In a list. Of lists. (A few of these are via Pop Candy, which is always a good source for lists and, well, just about everything else.)
When I was a kid, I often complained that my Princess Leia action figure just wasn't made right — it kept toppling over. And it annoyed me that her gun was so flimsy and useless, especially compared to Chewbacca's giant over-the-arm weapon. But at least the '70s toy version of Leia didn't look like Christian Bale:
Marc and Lee are back to dish on all things geek (sci-fi, fantasy, etc.) on television in this special small-screen edition of the Angry Puppy. Curious about what's going on with Battlestar, Bionic Woman, Terminator, Heroes, Torchwood, and more? Allow the fellas to help. That's what they're here for.
This week Tracy and Angela go all Larry David with their Curb Your Enthusiasm game ratings. They review NiGHTS, FIFA Street 3, Turning Point and more, and tell you why you should become a fan of Spandex immediately. Angela fumes over the Cooper Lawrence issue and Tracy discusses the time when her hands were out of action due to too much Tony Hawk's 2.
Enjoy their Dreamcast homage where they discuss some of the best titles available and best Dreamcast moments. They also reveal more geekiness in the form of lesbiangeek.com.
This week's Angry Puppy is full of shocking news about "full digital nudity", same-sex couplings in Mass Effect, Fox News' getting the story wrong, and the possible film adaptation of The Last Man on Earth. Oh my!
Marc and Lee also review "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," the first episode of Torchwood's second season. And finally, they notice something odd about both the Sci Fi Channel and The History Channel doing a series about hunting UFO's. As they guys say, The History Channel?
In this week's Angry Puppy video blog, Marc and Lee dish on vaginas with teeth (in regards to the horror comedy Teeth, which we also reviewed earlier this week), handi-cam horror (in regards to Cloverfield, which rocked the house), Marc's Top 10 Gay and Bisexual Sci-Fi Characters list, and much, much more. Did you happen to pass last week's Geek Challenge? Well they've got another one for you this week ... are you geek enough to handle it?
This week Tracy and Angela play with their bunnies on camera — all in
the name of visual entertainment, of course. They discuss Boogie Bunnies on XBLA, the Wii Zapper, the best online shooter titles around,
and how anyone could think Mass Effect is full of "humping."
In this week's Angry Puppy video blog, Marc and Lee geek out (as is their wont) over the recently-released Flash Gordon: Saviour of the Universe Edition DVD (OMGSAMJONESINHOTPANTSOMG), The Sarah Connor Crapsicle - oh, sorry - Chronicles, and King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, which was my favorite documentary of 2007.
This episode is extra-special in that the guys have buried a "Mystery Geek Challenge" in the vlog for perceptive nerds (Like You!) to tackle. It's like Blue's Clues for gay grownups!
