Ten Surprising Gay Sex Scenes

Hollywood producers and directors have a long tradition of shying away from gay male sex scenes – even as they labor valiantly to insert lesbian sex in places in the most ridiculous of places. Nina had lesbian sex in Black Swan to show how obsessed she was with herself? Really, Darren Aronofsky? Couldn’t you just come out and say, “This is how we got financing. A movie about ballet? I mean, are you kidding? Of course, we had to do this!”

But every now and then, a gay character does manage to see some action on TV or in the movies, as we’ve documented before in our articles Gay Sex Scenes That Made Movie History and TV’s Most Influential Gay Sex Scenes – and sometimes it even gets surprisingly steamy!

(My personal vote for the single hottest gay sex scene ever seen on television? This very NSFW 2006 scene from the Showtime series Sleeper Cell, co-starring uber-hottie Michael Rady. The hottest movie sex scene ever? Either the one in Priest or any of a number of scenes in Maurice.)

So what gay sex scenes have surprised us lately? The following scenes aren’t necessarily all “hot,” but they definitely had eyebrows lifting on the foreheads here at TheBacklot:

Jim Carrey Getting Very Personal in I Love You, Phillip Morris: Despite reports that Jim Carrey’s gay caper comedy was having its gay sex scenes edited for its American release, that turned out not to be the case (according to the co-directors). Within the first ten minutes, we saw Carrey drenched in sweat, banging another guy (who enthusiastically asked him to, um, well, not stop). It wasn’t quite sexy, but it effectively announced to the audience: “This is a gay movie – get used to it.”

Ian Coming Out on Top in Shameless: Showtime’s remake of the U.K. show Shameless is already on record as having the single funniest sex-related line of dialogue in recent memory: in the first season’s seventh episode, when Kash’s wife catches her husband on a video camera having sex with Ian, she says, “I should probably turn it off. But then I’d miss the part where you take it up the ass from a teenage boy. There it is, Billy Elliot cornholing the father of my children.”

We don’t see the scene in question – which is a good thing, because both the character and the actor are under age 18 – but in the ninth episode, after Ian starts hooking up with Mickey. We see them together in a brief sex scene, with the much more age-appropriate Mickey moaning, “Harder! Harder!” pretty much specifying exactly which position Ian prefers to take, at least with Kash and Mickey.

Talbot Getting “Staked” on True Blood: The single most surprising sex scene in recent memory? Probably the one where Eric stakes Talbot – in more ways than one! Right after having full on sex, Eric, um, penetrates him again, slightly higher up, with an actual wooden stake this time. And any idea that this isn’t one of the gayest, most provocative TV shows ever went right out the window.

Bob Revealed as “The Flipper” on Desperate Housewives: Earlier this season, in an intriguing character development (that ended up going absolutely nowhere), resident Wisteria Lane gay Bob was revealed as being a “man’s man” – a gay guy who likes sports and other traditionally masculine pursuits, even as he hates show tunes and other stereotypically “gay” interests. And in a very politically incorrect (but admittedly funny) plot-line that has Gabrielle concerned about all the time that Bob is suddenly spending with her husband Carlos, Lee reveals that in college Bob gained the nickname “The Flipper,” for his success in getting “straight” guys to have sex with him.

Brothers in Love in From Beginning to End: First, let’s be very clear: this Brazilian film is a bad movie, especially the second half. But it does have two impossibly pretty actors doing something we’ve definitely haven’t seen much of before: portraying two brothers in love. As with underage sex, it’s weird to call the movie’s incest chic “hot,” although that’s clearly what the director was going for. On the other hand, with actors this smokin’, it’s also hard to deny the obvious.

The Bisexual Orgy in Spartacus: Gods of the Arena: The Spartacus prequel turned out to be something of a bust in almost every respect (except for some solid screen-time for Lucy Lawless’ wonderful Lucretia). But there were several surprising developments, sexually speaking, especially in the fourth episode’s orgy: we saw gay gladiator Barca bottoming (and not particularly enjoying it); we saw plenty of male members throughout; and we saw a plot development that involves Ashur whoring out straight gladiator Dagan’s ass to a randy Roman – something that soon ends up biting Ashur in the ass.

Reichen and Rodiney Have a Threeway on The A-List: It’s sort of impossible to overstate the cringe-inducing train wreck that was the Logo reality show The A-List, about a group of bitchy, self-centered up-and-coming gay socialites in New York City. Given the premise, perhaps nothing should’ve surprised us, but we were still shocked, although not necessarily unhappily, when Reichen and Rodiney begin to have sex on camera in the hot tub (only to be interrupted, of course, by a call from Austin). And later, despite the fact that it’s absolutely none of our business, we learn that Reichen and Rodiney had recently had a threeway where they both played the, um, active role with a friend named “Tom.” Let the cringing begin!

The Blowjob in Is It Just Me? This isn’t “surprising” necessarily, but there’s a funny scene in the 2010 romantic comedy where the main character is arguing with his roommate over whether all gay guys just want sex. In order to bolster his argument, the roommate gestures down to his crotch. Sure enough, a third, previously-unseen guy lifts his head to agree – revealing that the roommate was actually getting a blowjob from another guy mid-argument.

Lionel and Marshall Go Cruising in the Park in United States of Tara: It takes a lot to shock us, but we admit we were shocked – and more than a little disturbed – when last year (in the “Open House” episode), Marshall’s gay BFF Lionel takes him to the city park to cruise for sex, in order to teach him how to be more “gay.”This is all so wrong on so many levels, but then who do they find on his knees in that park servicing another guy in the bushes? None other than Marshall’s gay neighbor Ted. But once again, you have to give the show props for willing to be so politically incorrect.

Bear Sex in Bear City: One of the things we weren’t crazy about in last year’s indie film Bear City was how the movie sexualized everything – even getting a cup of coffee – and portrayed the bear community as sort of a free-floating bathhouse. On the other hand, when was the last time you saw gay male bodies being sexualized that weren’t young, toned, and hairless? That’s surprising (and terrific) in itself. And we don’t think we’ve ever seen a watersports scene in a non-porno before, even one that was played for (admittedly funny) laughs.
