Tens Of Thousands March Through Italy For LGBT Equality, Civil Unions

Italy is the last major Western European nation to ban marriage equality.

People from nearly 100 different cities in Italy marched in rallies on Saturday to support equality for same-sex couples.

Italy is currently the only major country in Western Europe that does not provide at least some sort of legal recognition to gay couples, and the rallies were held this weekend because lawmakers are set to debate a bill in parliament next week.

Tens of thousands of people marched throughout Italy carrying rainbow flags and alarm clocks to tell the country that it was time to "wake up" and see that there's a need for civil unions.

Italy is mostly a Catholic nation, and the Catholic Church is strongly opposed to this kind of legislation.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled last year that Italy is violating human rights by failing to offer protection to same-sex couples.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has been promising to pass a law on civil unions for quite some time, but so far, without any success.

Lawmakers will be debating the bill on Thursday, however, so time will soon tell if those marching for equal rights were able to help make an impact.
