Texas Governor Holds "Religious Freedom" Bill Signing Surrounded by Chick-fil-A

The so-called "Save Chick-fil-A" bill comes after San Antonio's attempt to block the fast food chain from its airport.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott held a signing ceremony on Friday for his already-signed so-called "Save Chick-fil-A" law, surrounded by media and food and drink from the fast food chain.

Abbott officially signed the law back in June, which will go into effect in September. It prevents "the government from taking 'any adverse action,' against any person, contractor or business for its membership in or affiliation with a religious organization," and cleared the Texas legislature in May. Upon its passage, Abbott signaled he would sign it with a tweet showing a Chick-fil-A cup sitting on his laptop.

"Discrimination is not tolerated in Texas. No business should be discriminated against simply because its owners pay to a church or the Salvation Army or any other religious organization. No business should lose a government contract because of their religious beliefs. The 'Save Chick-fil-A' legislation that I’m about to sign is a victory for religious liberty in Texas," Abbott said at the ceremonial signing.

The law comes in response to San Antonio attempting to block the restaurant from opening in its airport, citing its anti-LGBTQ donations.

The Chick-fil-A executive responsible for running the company’s charitable arm has defended those donations by calling them "a much higher calling than any political or cultural war that’s being waged."
