Texas Lt. Governor Demands School Superintendent Resign For Approving Inclusive Bathroom Policy

Texas will pursue HB2-like "bathroom bills," warns Lt. Gov Dan Patrick.

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick is demanding Fort Worth school superintendent Kent Schribner resign after approving a district policy that allows trans students to use bathrooms and lockers appropriate to their gender identity.

"The job of a superintendent is not to be a social engineer,” he insisted.

But Scribner says he's proud of the guidelines, instituted last month.

"I think they provide educators with the ability to make all students more comfortable and confident in a learning environment. Children shouldn’t have to wait for their schools to feel safe and full of respect."

Patrick, who traveled to Fort Worth this week to address the issue, warned that the Lone Star State would be pursuing anti-trans legislature similar to North Carolina's HB2.

"Unfortunately what's happened in North Carolina... that's translating over to Texas. Legislation will be happening in 2017, so bills will be filed."

Local activists say the Republican politician is just exhibiting "fake outrage" to score political points.

“There is no news here,” said Equality Texas chair Steve Rudner. “The only news here is that the lieutenant governor has decided to pick on an already bullied group of kids. It’s shameful and it’s despicable."
