The Adorable Moschino Barbie Boy Was Cast By Designer Jeremy Scott, Not Barbie

He said "I felt it was natural."

The adorable little boy who made history last week as the first-ever boy to appear in a Barbie commercial was not cast at random.

The campy child won the hearts of many the minute he declared "Moschino Barbie is fierce!" and sealed the deal with a wink to the camera. He's sitting with two equally elated little girls in the commercial but he's clearly the star, according to a majority of commenters who fawned over his energy and stylish fauxhawk.

Barbie's parent company Mattel has been criticized in the past for perpetuating gender stereotypes but was praised for the inclusion of a boy in the new commercial celebrating Barbie's partnership with luxury fashion brand Moschino.

But it turns out Mattel and Barbie weren't behind the casting at all. That honor went to Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott, who said including a boy just felt "natural."

"When I dreamt up the concept for the Moschino Barbie fauxmercial, I felt it was natural to have a little boy representing for all the little boys like myself who played with Barbies growing up," he told the BBC in a statement. "Barbie was more than a toy, she was a muse for me."

Mattel confirmed the commercial was created by the company, but called it a "fauxmercial" to emphasize its retro feel and seemingly subpar production value.

"This video parodies iconic Barbie commercials from the 1980's starring a young [Moschino creative director] Jeremy Scott look alike," the company said. "The video celebrates how boys and girls alike play with Barbie - it's all about self-expression, fashion, imagination and storytelling."

Ok Barbie, now let's make this a regular thing!
