The Adrià Brothers Bring Cocktails to Barcelona at 41º

El Bulli, the restaurant that looks like a little castle, perched on one of Spain's Costa Brava outcroppings, is perhaps the most sought-after reservation in the world. But if you haven't already been, there's a good chance you're never going to Ferran Adrià's temple of molecular masterpieces - it's shutting down in a month. (Maybe it will reopen in two years. But maybe not. There's a lot of back and forth on the matter. How very Mediterranean!)

But here's what Ferran and his brother, Albert, are doing instead. They're bringing cocktails to Barcelona. Real ones. Historically, the closest you can get to a mixed drink in Spain is a red wine and Coke, or if you're at a super upscale place, a gin and tonic.

But finally, the art of mixed drinks is catching on. And if a place with this kind of cache is spearheading it, you know they'll spread across Barcelona. (And thank god for that - is there a better city in the world for enjoying a Tom Collins?)

The drinks menu does have some ... interesting choices. The Japanese Slipper is Midori-based, and Coke with gin is actually listed there like it's a thing to drink. But, they're also whipping up real daiquiris and French 75s and Aviations. And those Tom Collinses are made correctly, with gin, not vodka.

Though it is but a bar, reservations are a must. Upon arrival you'll be guided through the sister restaurant, Tickets, which looks like some horrible Times Square trap, but undoubtedly serves excellent food. Speaking of food, you'll probably go ahead and order the entire tapas menu at 41º. This isn't Barcelona on the cheap, but it sure does taste good.
