‘The Bachelorette’: Why Emily Picks Jef

I really can’t contain myself for Sunday’s finale and After The Final Rose,  because that’s when it will be revealed that Emily and Jef are engaged and the hearts of millions will be filled with joy and the (temporary) satisfaction that the world is indeed a good and just place after all.

Before you argue that it’s actually Emily and Arie who are engaged, please let me plead my case on why Emily is in fact engaged to Jef Holm.

I’ll admit that right from the premiere episode of The Bachelorette I was Team Arie. Not only was I immediately a fan of Arie’s looks, but he proved that he had the emotional maturity to take care of Emily and her daughter Ricki during the first cocktail party when he revealed to Emily that he was a race car driver—just like her deceased fiance. Plus, Emily and Arie had that unspeakable chemistry from day one. And they STILL do. Emily wouldn’t even invite him up to her room during the overnights because she didn’t trust herself with him. And, I think my favorite quote of the season is from the hometown episode when Emily sees Arie in his race car outfit driving around the track and blurts out, “Arie looks stupid hot.” That’s right, Arie can make a sweet, southern belle like Emily say something like “stupid hot.”

But something happened to me (and I dare say to most of the women in America) during episode five when Emily took the bachelors to London: I realized I was Team Jef. When Jef FINALLY kissed Emily on the bridge at night, overlooking a breathtaking view of London, I mean, isn’t this the sh*t Disney movies are made of? And isn’t that what we ALL want for Emily! She looks like a goddamn Disney princess after all. Anyway, I digress. Jef has such a sweet heart and also, I believe, the emotional maturity to care for Emily and Ricki. But the one thing that he has going for his relationship with Emily that none of the other bachelors provide is that he makes her feel like a giddy kid. I don’t see her acting that way with Arie or anyone else. It’s like he’s giving her back the innocence she lost when her fiance died. And every time I see them together I choke up. And in case you missed it, Emily choked up when Jef read that extremely romantic letter to her during his hometown date. She loves him, too.

Arie may have won Emily’s lady bits, but Jef has won her heart. And THAT is why she is going to choose Jef in the finale episode.
