The Best and Worst of "Orange Is The New Black" Season 3

Have you finished Orange Is The New Black season 3? Well, why not?! What's taking you so long?! Oh, you had things to do over the weekend? Well, lucky for you, I managed to watch the whole thirteen hour oeuvre in 3 days, and boy do I have a lot of opinions.

Below, check out our list of the best and worst of everyone's favorite prison dramedy. [WARNING: Some spoilers throughout!]

THE BEST

Laverne Cox as Sophia Burset

Sophia Burset was a decently featured character in the first season but only appeared in the background of the second. Luckily, the OITNB writers decided to feature Laverne Cox's character more heavily this time around. Not only does America's transgender sweetheart slay every scene she's in, her portrayal of her character is particularly thoughtful and poignant.

Burset's storyline bravely depicts the difficulties of life as a transgender parent and prisoner. Sophia must come to terms with her own child's frustrations while simultaneously fighting for survival in an increasingly hostile prison system. Netflix should be congratulated for taking a huge risk in depicting these struggles.

The incredibly diverse cast

On that note: there's been a backlash against diversity on the internet lately, with many claiming that tokenism and neo-liberal appeasement runs rampant in television, literature, and video games. Those people can look to Orange Is The New Black to be proven wrong.

This show has consistently portrayed the adversity of people from different backgrounds (white, black, latin, asian, lesbian, trans, straight, mentally ill, handicapped, etc...) and is much better for it. By having many characters (most of whom are women, excitingly!) from all walks of life, every scene feels more real, more interesting, and is often way funnier.

Prison Politics

The politics of the USA's prison industrial complex aren't pretty or particularly funny. OITNB does a great job of portraying contemporary problems in our justice system: corrupt guards, the increasing influence of private corporations on jails, housing for transgender inmates, constant budgeting concerns, etc... These are all very real and very serious issues that are not getting talked about in most mainstream media. Once again, the show's political project is equally important as it's emotional one -- and both are undertaken with incredible acumen.

THE WORST

Piper Chapman

Piper is ostensibly the show's main -- and least interesting -- character. This is not Taylor Schilling's fault at all: she's doing a fine job with an annoying part. But more than being generally whiny and irritating, I'm not so sure Piper's character makes too much sense? Within the course of any episode Chapman can go from being needy and whiny to brash and cruel to altruistic and sensitive to entrepenurial and cut-throat. I understand the desire to keep Piper around (she is, after all, how the story started) but the writers need to do a better job of making sure she has some kind of verisimilitude.

Prison seems fun?

I know I just praised OITNB for depicting very important societal ills, but sometimes it feels like the show isn't taking it's source material seriously enough. Like, doesn't being in this prison seem kind of fun sometimes? There's drama class and fun gossip and interesting people and lots of dancing! You can go for a run or hang out and read! It's not hard to sneak around unseen! Alternative crypto-economies, yay!

That's not to diminish the tortures the character's go through. Unfortunately, when not constructing agonizing rape scenarios, the writers of the show think they can use the throwaway line "This isn't summer camp!" to demonstrate how not-fun the prison is. But, you know, sometimes it kind of looks like the girls are in summer camp!

That F*cking Theme Song

Am I the only one who can't stand that bullshit twee garbage? Regina Spektor's music is like a dog whistle for basics. Every time an episode starts I have to rush hurriedly over to my controller to skip past the boring slideshow of mouths and eyes set to a song that might as well be from the Garden State soundtrack. And those lyrics! What is that cliche trash! You're not actually saying anything profound Regina! Quit it!
