The Big Gay Secret About Nick Jonas On “Kingdom” Is… (SPOILERS)

Tonight was the season finale of Kingdom, the debut DirecTV series about a family of mixed-martial artists starring Jonathan Tucker, Matt Lauria, and Nick Jonas.

It’s that last cast member who’s attracted a fair number of gay viewers to the show, especially since Nick hinted that the sexuality of his character, Nate Kulina, would be a major theme. But that’s as much as he would say on the matter.

Still, with the show wrapping for the season, it was now or never time for Nate to come out—if indeed that’s what was where the show was going.

This season, we've seen Nate freak out when he realized his physical therapist was gay. He also froze when he encountered a seemingly gay man at the mall.

So what's the deal? Spoilers ahead. (duh)

Yup, Nate is gay: In the finale, he was thrown out of a gay bar and drunkenly accepted an alleyway blowjob from another man.

Jonas says he knew what was going on with the character when he signed on. “Byron [Balasco, Kingdom creator] told me before shooting began,” he told Buzzfeed. “Everyone at Kingdom was really transparent about the character and some of the things the character would go through. And in my prep work, I wanted to be aware so I could properly tell this story.”

Prep work—is that why Jonas was hitting gay bars in New York earlier this year?

“For me, it was important to maintain the stakes for Nate,” Nick said. “He lives in a world of fear — fear of disappointing his father, both in the cage and outside of the cage — and he carries that pressure with him in so many ways. I think it’s something a lot of people can relate to.”

Jonas knows the role had to be handled right, but he's been eager to court the LGBT community for some time—from those club appearances and hunky photo shoots, to telling us he thinks the Jonas Brothers didn't do enough to embrace their gay fans.

“I’ve really been trying to make an effort to talk with my gay fan base and find unique opportunities to set up the next chapter of my life and my career with them in it,” he said. “I think we’re in a time where there’s a new progression. For all people of all walks of life to accept all people… I’d be thrilled if I’m any part of that.”

Jonas has already filmed some fairly revealing heterosexual lovemaking. Is he ready for a gay sex scene? “I have trust in Byron and the writing team to tell these stories in a really honest and grounded way, and it’s my responsibility as an actor to be that person and tell those stories the best I can,” he explained. “So, absolutely, I will do all I need to do.”

DirecTV picked up Kingdom for another 20 episodes, returning in spring 2015, so we'll definitely see more of Nate's angsty gay saga unfurl. But he won't be marching in a Pride parade any time soon.

“Just because we’ve seen a truth about Nate doesn’t mean anyone else has,” Balasco said. “The bigger issue for Nate is not what everybody else will think but his perception of what everybody else is going to think.”
