The Curious And Fabulous Evolution Of Laganja Estranja

"I have so much more to say than death-drops and tongue-pops."

In a new video shot at RuPaul's recent DragCon, former Drag Race contestant Laganja Estranja sits down to explain how she’s grown into the fierce and feathery queen you now see before you.

"I never really thought that I would be a drag queen,” she says. “I grew up in musical theater, so I love to sing and dance, and I like costumes and stuff. But I never thought, like, I would be a one-woman show. So I like to say that drag chose me.”

Laganja also explains why she was so over-the-top when she entered the season 6 workroom at the age of 24, after only doing drag for about a year. “While I was under Alyssa’s wing, I hadn’t really had a lot of one-on-one attention," she says, referring to drag mother Alyssa Edwards. "So to me, RuPaul’s Drag Race was like going to a musical theatre camp."

She might still serve stoner realness, but trust, mama, that she's not the same Laganja she was back in 2014. "I think that I was a little naïve in the beginning," she admits, "and now I’m a little bit more aware of my surroundings, the game that we have to play in Hollywood."

More than anything, though, she says her intentions have changed. “When I first started this, I wanted to be just a tongue-popping, death-dropping queen. And now I really would like to move into a place of art-making and creating pieces that make people think or maybe make people uncomfortable."

She may no longer feel attacked, but rest assured that she's still sensitive and vulnerable. "What I fear the most is being unsuccessful," she says. "I fear that my art will not be received well. I fear that I will never find a lover because I do drag. I fear lots of things, but I also think that I channel my fear into my art-making."

What's next? "I think the older I get, it’s just going to get more and more strange. Because quite honestly, for me, as much as I’ve loved being a pretty, fishy queen, I’m bored, girl! I’m ready to turn it up and do something else. There’s enough of these pretty girls walking around. I want to get weird."
