The Duggars Have The Sads As Arkansas Town Passes LGBT Protection Measure

"Today the people of Fayetteville voted for acceptance over fear."

Last night, Fayetteville, Arkansas, voted to adopt an LGBT rights bill, despite active politicking against it by the scandal-plagued Duggar family.

Uniform Civil Rights Protection Ordinance 5781 was approved late Tuesday by a 53-47 margin and will take effect on November 7.

“I think this says that Fayetteville voters really are fair and inclusive folks,” said Kyle Smith, president of For Fayetteville. “I think we proved tonight that this is the Fayetteville we all know and love.”

Last year, voters repealed a more comprehensive bill that had initially been approved by the Fayetteville City Council. 19 Kids and Counting star Michelle Duggar famously recorded a robocall message claiming that if the ordinance passed, perverts would prey on children and women in bathrooms by pretending to be transgender.

Guess the Duggars don't hold as much sway as they used to.

The new ordinance prohibits discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodation on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, and empowers a seven-member commission to review complaints.

“Today the people of Fayetteville voted for acceptance over fear and showed that cities can ensure religious freedom while protecting the rights of each and every citizen," Said the Northwest Arkansas Center for Equality in a statement. "History will remember this as a proud moment when businesses, religious leaders and everyday citizens worked together to unite our community, grow our economy and finally move Fayetteville forward.

Anti-equality forces, who outspent supporters of the bill two-to-one and still lost, sued to stop the election but failed. They're now issuing a legal challenge, claiming state law banning protections for LGBT people renders the ordinance invalid.
