The Essential Olivia Newton-John: Ranking Her 66 Greatest Songs

Olivia Newton-John is a cultural icon, one of our all-time greatest allies, and quite frankly, the greatest pure pop singer in history.

For over forty years she's been brightening our lives with her positivity and vivacity, as well as some ... surprising moments (don't we all wish we had a little Bad Sandy inside of us?)

Today is her 66th birthday, so let's take a look back at some of her musical highlights. These 66 songs are a good place to start the Essential Olivia!

66. HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS (1980) - Let's start things off with the opening song to her 1980 TV special, which brings a disco spin to Bob Seger's "Hollywood Nights." Olivia looks fantastic in a pink fringe bodysuit (and it's not easy to pull off a pink fringe bodysuit. Believe me, I know), surrounded by glitter, lame', spandex, and possibly gay dancers. You're welcome.

65. I HONESTLY LOVE YOU (1998) - For her first studio album in years, Olivia came Back With A Heart, and with producing (and vocal) help from Babyface, released this remake of one of her iconic hits. It peaked at #67 on the chart, becoming her highest charting song in a decade.

64. PHYSICAL (2010) - Speaking of remakes of iconic hits, in 2010 Olivia teamed up with Sue Sylvester and some hot guys for an autotuned tongue-in-cheek hot mess. But it brought Olivia back to the Hot 100 for the first time in 12 years, peaking at #89.

63. RECOVERY (1981) - An overlooked gem from Physical, the biggest selling studio album of her career.

62. SLOW BURN (2008) - Olivia played the unjustly incarcerated lesbian character Bitsy Mae in Sordid Lives and the prequel series version, and here she is singing a love song to Glyndora (the faboo Dale Dickey)

61. BANKS OF THE OHIO (1971) - Olivia's second single was a remake of a classic murder ballad. It flopped on the U.S. pop chart, but was a huge hit on the UK chart. (U.S. #94 UK #6)

60. TOTALLY HOT (1979) - Title track from Olivia's first post-Grease album, it showed off her new definitely non-country sound and look (U.S. #52 UK N/A)

59. NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO (1994) - Olivia's self-penned album Gaia: One Woman's Journey was one of the most critically acclaimed of her career, and featured this snappy single.

58. THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS (2000) - Olivia's first holiday album Tis The Season featured duets with Vince Gill, and the opener was a warm and affectionate classic cover.

57. RIGHT HERE WITH YOU (2008) - Olivia released her second album of duets, A Celebration In Song, in 2008, and it featured this stirring duet with fellow cancer survivor Delta Goodrem.

56. CULTURE SHOCK (1985) - We need to discuss Soul Kiss. It was Olivia's most critically maligned album. It's also my favorite Olivia album. It was slick, sexy, and veered into camp at times, which should not be dismissed. The gloriously schlocky "Culture Shock" is universally loathed, but I think it's a hoot.

55. STRONGER THAN BEFORE (2005) - Title track from Olivia's album of songs of inspiration for survivors of breast cancer, it's a powerful testament.

54. LET IT SHINE (1975) - Olivia had another huge hit on the country chart and AC chart, but it didn't perform as well on the pop chart. (U.S. #30 UK N/A)

53. BROKEN WINGS (2014) - Earlier this year, Olivia released the five song EP The Hotel Sessions, which was recorded over nine years, at hotel rooms she stayed during her concert tours. Included is a finely crafted remake of the Mr. Mister 80's classic.

52. SOMETHING BETTER TO DO (1975) - After five consecutive top ten songs on the pop and country chart, this chipper number just missed the cut, but it was another #1 smash on the AC chart. (U.S. #13 UK N/A)

51. IT'S ALWAYS AUSTRALIA FOR ME (1988) - This single was released for the Australian Bicentenary in 1988, and featured on the Australian version of The Rumour

50. EMOTIONAL TANGLE (1985) - Fragile ballad is another unfairly overlooked release from Soul Kiss

49. YOU LOOK LIKE A DICK TO ME (2008) - Olivia reprised her role as Bitsy Mae in Sordid Lives: The Series, and one of the highlights was this ode to a man named Richard.

48. HOW INSENSITIVE (2004) - Indigo: Women Of Song is a collection of covers of songs written by or made famous by women, and the opening track is the Bossa Nova classic "How Insensitive."

47. REACH OUT FOR ME (1989) - Olivia recorded Warm and Tender, a collection of lullabies and children classics, and it included a reworking of this Burt Bacharach/Hal David song

46. TOUGHEN UP (1985) - The second single from Soul Kiss was written for Tina Turner (by the same songwriters of "What's Love Got To Do With It"), but when she turned it down, Olivia grabbed it.

45. DEEPER THAN A RIVER (1992) - Written by Diane Warren for Back To Basics it reached the top 20 on the AC chart.

44. THE PROMISE (THE DOLPHIN SONG) (1981) - Final track on Physical, it was Eco-Olivia in full flight.

43. TAKE A CHANCE (1983) - The first song from Two Of A Kind on the list, this duet with John Travolta reached #3 on the AC chart, and was the last time Travolta was on any music chart.

42. FALLING (1998) - Olivia went back to her country roots for this duet with The Raybon Brothers.

41. I NEED LOVE (1992) - First single released from her collection Back To Basics, it presented a new sleek sound, but failed to register on the charts. (U.S. #96 UK #75)

40. HEARTACHE TONIGHT (1980) - From her "Hollywood Nights" special, Olivia takes on The Eagles classic with help from ... are you ready? ... Toni Tennille, Tina Turner, Linda (Peaches) Greene, Karen Carpenter, Elton John, Andy Gibb, Cliff Richard, and a biker gang. You're Welcome.

40. SHAKING YOU (1983) - Written by Olivia, it almost makes you forget how terrible Two Of A Kind was.

39. LIFT ME UP (2002) - Olivia released her duets album (2) in 2002, and it included this collaboration with Darren Hayes.

38. VALENTINE (2001) - Olivia teamed up with pianist Jim Brickman for this ultra-romantic ballad.

37. FACE TO FACE (1984) - From Barry Gibb's solo album Now Voyager, Olivia has always matched up wonderfully with the Gibb Brothers (U.S. #80 UK N/A)

36. SORDID LIVES (2001) - Title song from the classic comedy, it's the only time you'll hear Olivia use the word "shitty" in a song.

35. LIVIN IN DESPERATE TIMES (1984) - Second single from the Two Of A Kind soundtrack, it was Olivia's penultimate top 40 hit. (U.S #31 UK: N/A)

34. LOVE IS A GIFT (1998) - Do you know Olivia has a Daytime Emmy Award? It's for this track from Back With A Heart, which won Olivia a 1999 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Song after being featured on As the World Turns. It's a beautiful song, but Dr. Reid Oliver would roll his eyes.

33. WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR (1989) - From Warm And Tender comes another masterful retelling of a classic children's song.

32. LANDSLIDE (1982) - Opening track to Physical, it's the second greatest song titled "Landslide." The video gave us a good look at Olivia's hot piece Matt Lattanzi (U.S #52 UK: #18)

31. DON'T STOP BELIEVIN' (1976) - Olivia had another #1 AC smash and top 15 Country hit, but it faltered a bit on the pop chart. (U.S #33 UK: N/A)

30. I CAN'T HELP IT (1980) - Written by Barry Gibb, Olivia and Andy Gibb were a perfect combination for this AC classic duet. (U.S #12 UK: N/A)

29. TIED UP (1983) - The second single from Greatest Hits Volume 2, this slinky pop nugget should have been a much bigger hit (U.S #38 UK: N/A)

28. IF NOT FOR YOU (1971) - Olivia notched her very first top forty hit with this cover of a Bob Dylan song. (U.S #25 UK: #7)

27. DON'T CUT ME DOWN (1994) - Olivia's album Gaia: One Woman's Journey was her first album of self-penned songs, written after her breast cancer diagnosis. Ostensibly about conservation and saving forests, "Don't Cut Me Down" takes on an entirely new and poignant meaning as the closing theme of the AIDS film It's My Party

26. CAN'T WE TALK IT OVER IN BED (1988) - The second single from The Rumour failed to chart anywhere, but Grayson Hugh would record his own version and take it to the top 20.

25. SUSPENDED IN TIME (1980) - Gorgeous ballad from Xanadu wasn't a single, but should have been.

24. MAKE A MOVE ON ME (1982) - The follow-up to "Physical" was another smash, and became her 12th and final single certified Gold. (U.S #5 UK: #43)

23. COME ON OVER (1976) - Written by The Bee-Gees, it would be Olivia's last top ten hit on the country chart.(U.S #23 UK: N/A)

22. IF YOU LOVE ME (LET ME KNOW) (1974) - Her second top ten hit on the pop chart, it's probably the most "country" of all her pop hits. (U.S #5 UK: N/A)

21. DEEPER THAN THE NIGHT (1979) - The follow-up to "A Little More Love" showed off Olivia's new look and sound perfectly. (U.S #11 UK: #64)

20. THE BEST OF ME (1986) - Duet with uber-producer David Foster proved two things. Olivia can make anyone sound great, and as a singer, David Foster is a great producer. (U.S #80 UK: N/A)

19. WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN (2000) - From Sordid Lives, Olivia delivers a haunting performance of this classic. Now I need to go play Bioshock Infinite again.

18. SUDDENLY (1980) - Beautiful duet with Cliff Richard, it was another winner from the stellar Xanadu soundtrack. (U.S #20 UK: #15)

17. PLEASE MR. PLEASE (1975) - It was her fifth consecutive top ten hit on the pop and country charts, but it would be her last top ten pop hit until the Grease soundtrack. (U.S #3 UK: N/A)

16. LOVE AND LET LIVE (1988) - Olivia was the first major mainstream artist to address AIDS with this powerful entry from The Rumour. Trivia: It was written by the late Alan O'Day, who gave us "Undercover Angel," and Helen Reddy's "Angie Baby."

15. HEART ATTACK (1982) - Olivia released her Greatest Hits Volume 2 in 1982, and the first single became another major hit, and earned her another Grammy nod.(U.S #3 UK: #46)

14. SUMMER NIGHTS (1973) - The third top five hit from the iconic movie musical Grease, it's been covered by every middle school theater department for decades. (U.S. #5 UK: #1)

13. LET ME BE THERE (1973) - It all began with this smash, which was Olivia's first top ten hit on the pop and country chart, and won Olivia the Grammy for Female Country Vocalist. (U.S. #6 UK: N/A)

12. THE RUMOUR (1988) - Olivia came back after a three year absence with the album The Rumour, but her chart comeback was short-lived, as the title song (written for her by Elton John) flopped on the chart. It remains one of her most underrated singles (U.S #62 UK: N/A)

11. PHYSICAL (1981) - Well, it had to be here somewhere. Spending ten weeks at #1, it was not only the biggest hit of Olivia's career, it was Billboard's #1 Pop Single Of The 80's. (U.S #1 UK: #7)

10. SOUL KISS (1985) - Title track from "that" album is a gorgeous, shimmering delight, undeserving of its scorn. (U.S #20 UK: N/A)

9. XANADU (1980) - An epic collaboration with E.L.O., it was her second top ten smash from the ill-fated but beloved musical. (U.S. #8 UK: #1)

8. HOPELESSLY DEVOTED TO YOU (1978) - Written specifically for Olivia for Grease, it was nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. (U.S. #3 UK: #2)

7. TWIST OF FATE (1983) - Two Of A Kind was an even bigger box office disaster than Xanadu, but still gave us a great soundtrack, including Olivia's final top ten hit. (U.S #5 UK: #57)

5. YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT (1978) - Hitting #1 in 14 countries, it's one of the biggest selling singles of all time, and helped make Grease one of the biggest musicals of all time. (U.S. #1 UK: #1)

4. HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN MELLOW (1975) - Her second consecutive #1 song on the Hot 100, it's the epitome of AM Gold, and was featured in the Broadway production of Xanadu (U.S. #1 UK: N/A)

3. MAGIC (1980) - Her biggest hit not titled "Physical," it spent four weeks at #1, and took a lot of the sting out of the box office failure of Xanadu. (U.S #1 UK: #32)

2. THE RIGHT MOMENT (1985) - The closing track on Soul Kiss, It's one of Olivia's finest vocal performances, and Olivia's siren song at the end still sends chills.

1. A LITTLE MORE LOVE (1979) - The perfect bridge between Olivia's early country-pop and her "Physical" years, this was Olivia at her sultry innocent best, and displayed a confidence and strength we hadn't seen before. It's pop perfection. (U.S: #3 UK: #4)
