When a celebrity couple splits, a certain faction of the Internet is known to deal with the grief by making art: namely, the YouTube celebrity break up tribute montage (which, somewhat oddly, belongs to the same tradition and trope as the “reality show animal death tribute montage,” see Flower from Meerkat Manor. On YouTube, at least, a celebrity breakup and a famous animal death merit identical memorials.)
Last night, of course, the news broke that Amy Poehler and Will Arnett have decided to split, so a tribute montage couldn’t be far away, and there’s already a first one. Entitled “Amy Poehler and Will Arnett: Comedy’s First Couple: A Love Tale,” this one uses the most familiar conventions of the Celebrity Breakup Tribute Montage (namely, Sarah McLachlan’s “The Arms of the Angel,” and total half-assedness) to “mourn” the couple, except it turns out to be a joke – one that gets a little funnier toward the end as it goes through the stages of “grief” and Arnett-bodysnarking.
