The First Gay Kiss On Cartoon Network Was Censored

Baby steps?

Cartoon Network took a small step forward by including a gay couple on the animated series Clarence, but then censored a kiss between them.

In the episode "Neighborhood Grill," Clarence's teacher is waiting for her blind date at a local restaurant.

When a handsome man walks in the door, she assumes its him—a mistake that's cleared up when he greets his REAL date, a man, with two pecks on the cheek.

Originally, though he was supposed to give him a bouquet and an unambiguously gay kiss on the mouth.

On Twitter, one viewer asked writer Spencer Rothbell, "I seriously want to know if you guys had a fight with CN to get a gay couple there."

Rothbell replied, "yeah originally the guy had flowers and they kissed on the mouth."

According to Huffington Post, Rothbell added, "It’s such a minor throwaway moment but I guess it’s better than nothing. Maybe one day the main character can be gay and it won’t be a big deal."

Wouldn't that be great?
