"The Good Wife" Spinoff Gets A Lesbian Lead

"The Good Fight" will premiere on CBS' All-Access streaming service in February.

The world of Lockhardt/Gardner is getting a little queerer: A spinoff of The Good Wife, the long-running CBS legal drama starring Julianna Margulies, will reportedly feature a lesbian lead character.

TV Line reports that The Good Fight will see Rose Leslie play Maia, a lawyer in a long-term relationship with girlfriend Amy (Helene Yorke). Maia is the goddaughter of Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski), who is forced to restart her career after a nasty financial scam derailed her firm.

Showrunners Robert and Michelle King confirmed Maia’s sexuality to Entertainment Weekly, sharing a photo of the two canoodling on the couch.

Viewers might know Leslie from her roles on Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey, but in joining The Good Fight, the 29-year-old actress has some big shoes to fill. Archie Panjabi, who played bisexual fan favorite Kalinda Sharma, departed the original series after its sixth season following speculation of behind-the-scenes tension with Marguiles. (The ER alum has denied reports, though.)

When Wife debuted in 2009, Kalinda—a stoic investigator with a taste for leather jackets was the only queer South Asian character on television. Panjabi was also the first cast member to win an Emmy, but fans complained that her character got short shrift in later seasons.

The Good Fight hopes to fix that by putting its queer character front and center.

Debuting on CBS All-Access in February, the show will also boast the return of many members of the original series’ impressive cast. While there’s no word on whether Alan Cumming, who plays political strategist Eli Gold, will come back, fans can look forward to seeing Sarah Steele as his daughter, Marissa.

Cush Jumbo, the Kalinda surrogate in the show’s final season, will also appear. And the Kings have said they'd love for Margulies to make a guest appearance.

In addition, The Good Fight welcomes some fresh faces to the cutthroat world of Chicago law. New cast members include Broadway legend Bernadette Peters, Justin Bartha (The New Normal), Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty), Paul Guilfoyle (CSI), and Erica Tazel (Justified).

This groundbreaking news coincides with reports that the lead of Star Trek: Discovery, which will also air exclusively on CBS’ streaming service, will be played by an actress of color, Sonequa Martin-Green. She joins Anthony Rapp as the franchise's first openly gay crew member.
