Critics Really, Really Dislike 'The Host'

[caption id="attachment_95135" align="aligncenter" width="607"]Look how gritty! Look how gritty![/caption]

Critics weren't too thrilled about the movie adaption of The Host. Were we really expecting anything different though, really? Here's what some of the critic's have to say about this sci-fi not-really-masterpiece. Better luck next time, eh?

"Dopey, derivative and dull, The Host is a brazen combination of unoriginal science-fiction themes, young-adult pandering and bottom-line calculation. That sounds like it should work (really!), but it never does, largely because the story is as drained of energy as are its moony aliens." - The New York Times

"More serious than Seeker's lack of scare is the film's story arc. How Wanda finds her 'humanity' and how the remaining real people recover theirs should have been far more soulful. Instead we spend a lot of time listening to Melanie nag Wanda, while the other characters wander in and out of frame." - Los Angeles Times

"When not idling above ground, The Host confines itself to an underground series of caves that look like soundstage sets (and not enough of them). There's a river, too, resembling one of those lazy rivers at a Wisconsin Dells water park." - Chicago Tribune

"Suspension of logic and disbelief aside (for instance, if the Souls are implanted, who implanted the first one?), the excess and dialogue of The Host work overtime to discredit its relationships, and certainly, its sincerity. In flashbacks reinforcing the Meyer philosophy that women can own their sexuality so long as they're fully surrendering to a man, Melanie is seen telling Jared that they 'only have right now,' and that when he touches her, she doesn't want him to stop."  - Slant Magazine

"This cut-rate sci fi, though, isn’t going to measure up even to those meager standards. Though there are some intriguing ideas here — namely a love rectangle involving two cute guys, the plucky main character Melanie and the alien who has taken up residence inside her — The Host is an early contender for Worst Movie of 2013. It’s so bad, Adam Sandler should be in it." - Miami Herald

Ouch, that last one was harsh. Still, you win some you lose some, right? We think The Host isn't going to be on the top of everybody's list of movies to see this weekend.  Maybe you should go see Spring Breakers, instead - at least the critics looked at it more favorably.
