The Korean Lesbian Thriller That Took Cannes By Storm

The must-see movie of 2016.

The Handmaiden is a Korean lesbian revenge thriller about a pickpocket who poses as a maid to swindle a rich heiress, and it's the movie everyone will be talking about when it hits stateside this September.

The period piece is from director Park Chan-Wook who's most famous for one of his previous films-the international hit, Oldboy.

The Handmaiden made its premiere at this year's Cannes to a packed house, and was greeted with rapturous reviews. Even before its premiere the film had already been pre-sold to 120 countries, and eventually went on to be sold to 175 territories, beating out Snowpiercer to become the most widely distributed Korean film in history.

"Snowpiercer starred top global stars like Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton, which gave it more of an international appeal. So it's doubly meaningful that The Handmaiden attracted so many buyers in spite of the language barrier," said a spokesperson for CJ, the company that released The Handmaiden.

Amazon bought the U.S. rights to the film and will release it theatrically in September.

The cryptic teaser trailer doesn't reveal too much about the plot, but Jada Yuan, from Vulture was at the Cannes screening and hinted at some of the crazy scenes in the movie including "mid-air sex demonstrations with a wooden mannequin; liquid opium; hidden moats; a prominent octopus; constantly shifting alliances."

Color us intrigued!

Watch the teaser below and keep an eye out for The Handmaiden when it comes to the U.S. this fall.
