"Leftovers" Producer: "There's No Excuse Not to Show More Dongs" On TV

"I want to normalize male nudity on television."

The Leftovers wrapped up its third and final season this week and while the show will undoubtedly be remembered for its stellar acting, co-creator Damon Lindelof hopes it's also remembered for its plethora of male nudity.

The former Lost producer recently spoke about the dearth of naked men on TV, saying he wants to help equalize the number of nude guys to that of naked women.

"There’s an incredible disproportion between naked women and naked men on television," he told TVLine. "And if you’re going to do a show on HBO, which is one of the few places where you can do full frontal nudity, there’s no excuse not to show more dongs. I’m passionate about it."

He went on to say that the times the show's featured these full frontal moments (notably with stars Christopher Eccleston and Chris Zylka), they've left audience members surprised and uncomfortable.

"The audience still has a very odd reaction to seeing male genitalia," he said. "Yet when they see female genitalia or naked breasts, they’re completely nonchalant about it. [So] I’m just the beginning of the vanguard, but I want to normalize male nudity on television."

Lindelof isn't the only one hoping to get more naked men on the small screen—earlier this year, out screenwriter Bryan Fuller's new show American Gods featured an intimate and incredibly physical sex scene between two male characters.

"The jinn comes into Salim’s life to say, 'It’s OK to be who you are,'" actor Mousa Kraish told Out of the scene. "Now more than ever that story is incredibly powerful. The sex scene is so intense and intimate. I don’t think anything like it has ever occurred on TV."
