The New "Princess Diana Looking Gay" Insta Is a Pride Gift

On the heels of the royal wedding, and just in time for Pride month, the account offers "comedic relief in a sad, dark time."

Just in time for Pride month, and on the heels of the Prince Harry, Meghan Markle royal wedding, a new Instagram account appreciating the queer icon that is Princess Diana in a new light is here to give us all joy in tough times.

"Princess Diana Looking Gay" is the work of Lauren Pellerano Gomez, a a 28-year-old magazine editor living in Massachusetts.

As the name suggests, it features photos of Diana looking fabulously queer, on the tennis court, kiki-ing with Liza Minnnelli, rocking a bow tie better than any man could ever hope to, and in moments of connection with other women.

While she knows the belated princess didn't identify as LGBTQ, Gomez told Vanity Fair she thinks it's fair to interpret the account as a celebration of her allyship to the community during her life.

It's a worldview she passed on to her children, as both Prince William and Prince Harry have shown themselves to be strong advocates for LGBTQ people , and those living with HIV/AIDS.

"I think the account leads with aesthetics and humor, and it could be read in any number of ways," she added. "She’s definitely part of the queer lexicon."

While she said she didn't think of the fact that she was launching the account at the start of Pride month, she allowed that it might have been a subconscious factor, and at any rate calls it "a happy coincidence that I was not mad about."

In addition to honoring Princess Diana, she said her efforts are also part of lifting up the contributions lesbians have made to fashion.

"A crowning moment for me, in terms of the media, was a couple years ago when The New York Times published an article where they acknowledged that every single fashion moment comes from lesbian culture. I thought it was the most validating thing that ever happened in my whole life," she said.

"Lesbians always get the terrible rap for wearing flannel and Birkenstocks. Let’s not forget that flannel in the 90s—Kurt Cobain made every girl drool with that. And Céline adopted the Birkenstock-style line. It’s like, 'Hello, can we get some credit?' Historically, gay men are seen as these icons, in terms of creating what style is."

While the royal wedding did give her inspiration, she admits it wasn't because she got swept away in the fervor.

"I was reminded of the whole legacy, given all of the fanfare over this royal wedding that just happened. People went crazy over this, and I didn’t watch the wedding—I don’t think it’s interesting. I remember Princess Diana’s impact feeling really big to me at the time. I thought, 'Let’s throw it back to Princess Di. Let’s get her back in the conversation.'”

And she does want it to be a conversation, asking for fan submissions of Diana looking gay that she can add to the growing collection.

"I want people to get creative with it and have fun. The whole point of it is it’s just light," she noted. "It’s for comedic relief in a sad, dark time."
