It’s Judith Light vs. Ben Platt In “The Politician” Season 2 Trailer

The gloves come off and the claws come out.

Everyone’s talking about this year’s upcoming presidential election—but there’s another political showdown happening: Ben Platt vs. Judith Light.

Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series, The Politican, was one of the most buzzed-about shows of 2019. The first season finale set up Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) running against New York Senator Dede Standish (Judith Light), and her Chief of Staff, Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler).

Netflix has released a new trailer for the upcoming second season of The Politician, which hits the streaming service this Friday, June 19. In the description for the seven-episode season, the fight between Payton and Dede continues, but Payton’s mother, Georgina (Gwyneth Paltrow) will also be stepping into the political arena, making a “momentous decision that threatens to upstage him.” And judging from the new preview it looks like Georgina is running to be the next Governor of California.

“We were lucky enough that we finished filming and editing right before the coronavirus thing happened. We have seven. We finished all of our episodes,” Murphy explained to Collider earlier this year. “We have a great second season and I think we’re trying to figure out how do we mix them now in the social distancing age. It’s going to come out in the middle of June still. I’m really proud of it.”

Back in April, Murphy confirmed that the new season of The Politician will focus on Payton going up against Dede and Hadassah:

I love how Payton has grown up. He’s now in college, and the best thing about the season is the Ben Platt versus Bette Midler and Judith Light aspect. It feels very adult, it feels very topical. It’s sort of a story about baby boomers asking themselves, “Is it time for us to pass the power that we have onto the next generation, or are they too dumb to figure it out yet?” And I think you can see that battle playing out daily in our political landscape. And it’s what it’s about, and it’s a very cutthroat race that they run. It feels much more adult, much more sexualized. It’s really great. And Ben, but particularly Judith and Bette Midler really, I think, their performances are extraordinary.

As if Murphy weren’t busy enough with his new Netflix series Hollywood, not to mention planning upcoming seasons of other projects like American Horror Story, he says he intends to do one more season of The Politician, for a total of three seasons:

I would love to do is take a couple of years off and have Ben Platt get a little bit older for his final race. That would obviously be a presidential race, right? That’s always what we had designed, and I think that’s what our plan is. I’m going to wait. Ben is young, so I want to wait a couple of years to figure out how we age him up a little bit. But that’s always been my plan.

President Payton? He has our vote. Check out The Politician Season 2 trailer below.
