The first trailer for The Politician has dropped and it looks like Popular meets Election—so obviously the series already has our vote.
If you’re behind on the news of Murphy’s many television projects in development, The Politician is his new series focusing on Payton Hobart (Tony winner Ben Platt), who has known since he was a kid that he would become President of the United States. But first he has to be elected student body president, secure a spot at Harvard, and “stay on his singular path to success”—all while navigating the treacherous waters of being a teenager in today’s world.
In addition to Platt, the series also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, Laura Dreyfuss, Rahne Jones, Theo Germaine, Julia Schlaepfer, and Bob Balaban, along with Dylan McDermott, January Jones, Judith Light, and Bette Midler.
It was previously reported that each season of the show will follow a different political race for Payton—senator, governor, president?—and yes, there will be musical numbers.
The series doesn’t debut on Netflix until September 27, but the streaming service has released the first preview—and like most of Murphy’s projects, it looks super crazy, juicy, and gay. So gay, in fact, that in the trailer Lange’s character is confused on why calling a gay man a “butt munch” is an insult since “that’s what gays do! Munch butts and celebrate Halloween!” Show us the lie.
Pundits are already covering the 2020 election 24/7, but we’re counting the days until this major political event. Check out the trailer below.
