LGBT candidates are throwing their hat in the rings in record numbers, including some dark horses: Peter Boykin is president of Gays for Trump and co-owner of MAGA One Radio, and now a candidate for the North Carolina House of Representatives.
“I want to ensure people of all walks of life are treated with dignity and respect so long as they also return the favor,” Boykin said in a statement. “Equality is treating everyone with equal respect regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation, religion, political party, or opinions.”

The district Boykin is running in includes Greensboro, and traditionally leans Democratic, though efforts at gerrymandering have lead the courts to redraw district lines. North Carolina has dealt with its share of LGBT issues, including HB2, but Boykin says his platform focuses on employment and public safety.
Of course, his idea of public safety means arming people at schools and churches.
“My goal as a representative… is to ensure our children and our family’s feel secure and safe when attending school, church, or public events, knowing trained individuals are present to safeguard their lives and they will all make it home each and every day.”
For Boykin’s sake we hope he’s a better candidate than he is organizer: A Gays for Trump rally last weekend drew barely 100 people.
“Donald Trump has delivered for us every single day,” Boykin told participants in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Pointing to the drained Reflecting Pool, he added, “And you can see here our president has drained the swamp in Washington as he has promised… We love a president who is open and honest.”
