The Shady Story Behind Simon Doonan's "The Devil Wears Prada" Audition

Simon Doonan shared a tale of Hollywood heartbreak at the House of SpeakEasy’s recent literary gala: A style icon and creative ambassador-at-large Barneys New York, Doonan was being considered for a part in that fabulous fashion fable The Devil Wears Prada.

According to Page Six, Doonan read for the part of Nigel Kipling, the right-hand queen to Meryl Streep’s cold-as-ice Miranda Priestly.

And after getting a callback, the petit Brit thought he had the role in the (Chanel) bag—even announcing to his pet Norwich terrier, Liberace, “We are going to claw our way to the top! Acting? Anyone can do that!”

Then, he learned fellow fashionistos Roberti Verdi and Phillip Bloch were also asked to audition, before the role finally went to Stanley Tucci.

Doonan suspects foul play: “We were part of some carefully orchestrated free research for some actor who’d get the role.”

The shade of it all!
