The Vh1 Tumblr got a little slash happy last week turning MaKayla Maroney into the physical manifestation of pretty much every slash fan ever and of course they had to shout out to our personal favs Vhelton.

After excluding non-canon pairings in this year's Top TV Couples Tournament EOnline has created a competition for “fantasy” ships. Personally, I find the idea of the Fantasy TV Couples tournament to be a bit patronizing, but it’s still nice to have an excuse show your favorite pairing some love. Anyway we know the only poll that really matters to slash fans is AfterElton’s own Ultimate Slash Madness Tourney, but I guess it can’t hurt to get some practice in.

Last week Catherine mentioned that Teen Wolf’s Danny and Alpha twin Ethan are officially an item (of sorts) and that means one thing – let the Danny/Ethan fandom commence. Not sure what the ship name is, but it looks as though Danthan is getting some traction. Anyway it’s only been a couple of weeks, but I have already found a fic, a graphic and a gifset. If this is what we get from a small spoiler imagine what it’s going to be like when we get actual footage!

Speaking of Teen Wolf – our intrepid leader Jeff Davis took over the Teen Wolf Tumblr to answer the fan’s questions… again. During the event we learned that Keahu’s dimples are blinding, Posey’s hugs are legendary and Derek can slow dance. He even answered a couple of the inevitable Sterek questions, stating that Stiles and Derek will become allies this season and there will definitely be scenes between them. And when asked if knowledge of the ship affected his writing this is what he had to say:

“It did make me wonder about certain scenes for these first few scripts. I would not say it has affected the storytelling, though. There has been a long plan in place for certain characters. The path deviates sometimes but the destination remains the same.” (x)

In Supernatural news: Misha Collins’ talked about slash (specifically Destiel) at Emerald City Comicon –

This upset a number of fans for a bunch of different reasons. Some are concerned that Misha’s comments about how the show treats slash felt like “queerbaiting”. Others are more ashamed of the fandom’s behavior during the panel. While I could spend pages expressing my own thoughts on this matter, I would much rather hear what you guys think? Let us know your thoughts on these issues in the comments or on the Tumblr.

In other news: the Supernatural cast and crew proved once again that they are better than you by making their own Harlem Shake video… I know you thought that fad was over but trust me, go watch it. Klaine fans were ecstatic when the pairing performed one of the fandom’s favorite songs “Come What May” on Glee last week proving that sometimes if you wish hard enough dreams do come true even if it doesn’t happen exactly like you planned. Finally there’s a new Star Trek Into Darkness trailer… Kirk told you it would fit Spock.

M/M Pairing of the Week: J.D./Turk (Scrubs)

It’s been a while since the doctors of Sacred Heart hospital graced our screens (and we’re still trying to forget about the final season) but that doesn’t mean I have forgotten about the beautiful love story between John Dorian and Christopher Turk. Yes they both ended up married to some pretty awesome ladies but there is no denying that the most important relationship in both J.D. and Turk’s lives is the one they share with each other. If you’re not convinced here’s what happened when they were reunited after Turk returned from his honeymoon:

Strange as it might seem, J.D./Turk was never really a popular pairing in the Scrubs fandom (they tended to be overshadowed by the much more prolific J.D./Cox) but there’s still some love to be found if you look hard enough. The Guardian listed them as one of their 10 fav will-they-wont-they pairings back in 2008 and there are a couple of fics floating around (including this one and this one). Then again, I guess there isn’t much need for fan fiction when the characters themselves admit to being a little married. Okay so I’m pretty sure they actually said “no homo” on the show once but I still ship them because it’s guy love between two guys.

Accidentally Shipped: Ferris/Cameron (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

You know that feeling when you’re watching one of your favorite childhood movies and suddenly... slash? No? I guess it’s just me then. The point is sometimes I go back and watch something that I have not seen in years and start to notice things I didn’t see before. This happened the other day when I was watching one of my all time favorite films: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

All right, so ignoring the whole Ferris Bueller is fight club theory and focusing on the characters, I couldn’t help but notice that Ferris and his best bud Cameron seemed to be a little bit more than friends. I mean Ferris spends the whole day trying to prove to Cameron that he made the right decision by joining Ferris on his day off. Sure, Ferris’s girlfriend Sloane is there, but the day really is all about Ferris and Cameron. It’s their last chance for quality time before they both head off to college. Also, Ferris dives into a pool to rescue his friend, and you know how us slash fans feel about recusing someone from water. Besides, when Ferris climbs onto that parade float it’s Cameron he dedicates the song to, not Sloane.

Accidentally Shipped (revisited): Casey/Severide (Chicago Fire)

Remember awhile back when I was accidentally shipping two Chicago fire fighters? It turns out it wasn’t as accidental as I thought because the Casey/Severide fandom is taking off. Considering one of our lovely readers asked my fellow slash expert Aja if we could feature the pairing a little more, I thought it would a good time to give you an update on all things Casey/Severide.

The number of fics on Ao3 is growing all the time and there are quite a few really awesome fan vids on youtube (try this one). I haven’t found any fanart yet (if you have seen any please let us know), but there are some cool edits on Tumblr. This is your chance to get in on the ground floor of an up and coming slash pairing, so be sure to give these two wonderfully damaged firemen a look.

Trope Appreciation: Coffee Shop AU

Way back in her first column Catherine defined "AU" (Alternative Universe), so I hope you all have a basic grasp on the concept because I want to highlight a specific kind of AU: the Coffee Shop AU. If you have entered into the world of fan fiction in any way you have probably come across some kind of Coffee Shop AU. (They say it’s not a real fandom until there is at least one).

Basically, writers take characters out of their own world and place them in a coffee shop. Usually one half of a pairing is a barista and the other half is a customer (with benefits). Although sometimes both are customers that just happen to interact at a coffee shop or possibly they are both baristas. Whatever the reason, the majority of the narrative (usually a romance) takes place in a coffee shop.

The thing about Coffee Shop AU’s is that they are endearingly domestic. The texts, and ships, that we love are more often than not presented to us on an epic scale. These stories are quite literally life or death especially if they are science fiction or fantasy (like so many slash favorites are). So I find it fascinating that people love taking these characters and placing them in an environment that is so exceedingly ‘everyday’. Most of us frequent coffee shops (I’m pretty sure I would stop living without them) but they are not usually seen as romantic location.

Yet for some reason or another the coffee shop has captured fans hearts to the point where there are over 300 fics on A03 alone. Try not to take them as an accurate representation of reality though because I have been frequenting coffee shops for years and a cute barista has yet to fall in love with me.

There are so many Coffee Shop AU’s that I’m not even sure where to start, but I’ve waded through the pile a picked out a few I think you might like including an Anders/Male Hawke fic fresh from my first foray into gaming slash. Featured Fan Fic: "Caffeine, Otherwise Known as the Key to Tony Stark’s Heart" by sol-nox

Surprise, surprise I’m recommending you a coffee shop AU (there’s a theme). This one comes courtesy of The Avengers fandom and it’s about the pairing of Steve Rogers and Tony Stark (otherwise known as Stony aka super-husbands). While it’s not the best fic I have ever read (and it’s a little OOC at times) it does perfectly encapsulate the mundane domesticity that I love about coffee shop AU’s.

Basically, it’s a non-Superhero AU where a new coffee shop opens across the street from Stark Tower. Steve is the hot, sweet and predictably clueless owner and Tony tries to do what he does best.

Excerpt:

The first time Tony Stark walked into his tiny coffee shop, Steve thinks it was an accident. Has to have been. The man can afford to have his morning coffee made in Colombia and flown to his penthouse before it gets cold. There’s no reason why he’d prefer Steve’s coffeehouse concoctions.

More likely he’d been heading for the neighboring laundromat that serviced high income clientele. But why would Tony Stark pick up his own laundry? He must have a personal assistant to do all that for him.

Eventually Steve realizes Stark is waiting to have his order taken.

“Hi,” Stark says. “Happens all the time. People are overcome by my presence, don’t worry, totally understandable. Though you’re the first I’ve had gawk at me for a full minute.” He gives Steve a slow smile that makes his pulse jump.
