What These Gay Seniors Have To Say About Life Will Change You

Davey Wavey decided it was time to get some advice for young LGBT people from those who have lived it—and then some. So he recruited gay seniors from the Palm Springs LGBT Center to pass on their words of wisdom.

After asking the panel to compare what it was like being gay decades ago to what it is like to be out now, things got emotional pretty quickly.

"Today's world—my goodness," said one 65-year-old man, tearing up. "I get very emotional when I talk about today."

Kim, a lesbian, spoke from the heart: "I didn't think anybody would ever value me, or love me, or hire me."

But times have changed, and these folks feel the difference: One man positively beamed, "I'm married!"

What's their best piece of advice? Most agreed its vital to acknowledge your difference and remain true to yourself.

"I would say the same thing to all of us, said one woman. "That our queerness—that thing that sets us apart, that can cause us to feel unwanted, unloved, rejected, and alone in the world—is a gift. Be brave, the journey is just beginning."

Oy, we need a tissue.
