This Male Tango Couple Will Sweep You Off Your Feet: WATCH

tango

The tango originated in Buenos Aires in the 1800s, when working class men would dance together in brothels as they waited for the ladies to become available.

In the intervening decades, though, the dance became associated with heterosexual sex—a "three-minute love affair" in which the man (the lead) seduces the woman (the follow).

The modern queer tango movement looks to free the dance from its heteronormative handcuffs and return it to its same-sex roots. Without male and female partners, there's no designated "leader" or "follower"—couples can even switch back and forth.

Earlier this year at the Cork Tango Festival, male tango dancers Martin Maldonado and Maurizio Ghella demonstrated just that to "Todo es Amor" ("All is Love") by Fulvio Salamanca.

And at the Mediterranean Summer Tango Festival in Croatia in 2011.
