Thomas The Butler's "Tragic Journey" Comes To An End With Final Season Of "Downton Abbey"

“The [reason] why Thomas is the way he’s been the past six years will be unlocked – for good or bad – at the end of the series.”

Downton Abbey returns to the airwaves in the UK on September 20 for its sixth and final season—and word is one of the most explosive storylines will involve Thomas Barrow, the show’s troubled gay underbutler.

Rob James-Collier, who plays Thomas, told the Mirror, we’ll see the character “right on the brink."

“He’s been worn down by years and years of society saying 'you can’t be who you are,' and this series deals with that tragic journey.”

Indeed, Thomas has schemed, stole, seduced and betrayed throughout the show's five seasons. Last season, he made a desperate attempt to "cure" himself of his homosexuality.

"He’s never been truly happy with himself, which is why he is so conflicted and nasty,” adds Collier, who teases that Thomas' fate "will be as powerful as Downton can get.”

It’s been confirmed the character, who Downton creator Julian Fellowes calls Season 6’s "tragic hero,” will die before the last episode ends.

Given how much the guy smokes, we have to assume it'll be from lung cancer.

But Collier says we’ll learn more about the scheming manservant before he meets his maker.

“The [reason] why Thomas is the way he’s been the past six years will be unlocked – for good or bad – at the end of the series.”

Downton Abbey returns in the U.S. on PBS January 3.
